Everything is relative...
I cannot imagine being as cold as where my son is (Calgary)..
He spent time in the northern territories on an expedition also....
40 below....I just have no concept...

I've never seen 40 below.

A  bunch of years ago we had a stretch of about 2 weeks where it was regularly 20 below and we never saw 0...

of course the never seeing 0 happens most winters here.

That explains it. ;D

You like the Queen Vic market?

-40. That's such a dangerous cold. 'Spose it's normal for some folk.

Cold enough for me. We see 0 just a few times during a harsh winter. We turn the heater off overnight and back on in the morning. I guess yours stays on?

We visit the wifes family in Orange NSW.
Regularly below 0, and max temps just above.
Is due to elevation and the wind chill there is awful...
However never gets near your 20 below...Cold enough for me.

Last time I visited Queen Vic Mkt was 2005 when we bought jackets...
It was quite good to visit as a tourist :-)

We were wearing at jackets at ST Kilda beach that year.
Crazy Russian couple went for a swim.....

I'm talking 00 F

We don't use our fossil fuel heater in the old house. You can't burn enough of it to stay warm.

Our wood stove burns 24/7 from end of September until April.

Oh, of course. Shit that's cold. Yeah only 30 of yours is a very cold day here and only rarely seen in Melbourne. It's telling that we turn the gas heater off when we go to sleep. Even with ice all over the cars on a 30F morning they start no worries without any of those extra things some folk have to do.

The only time I've ever had car issues was during the -20 period.

Not in the gas jobs.

Diesels sometimes get plugged in, but these days everything has glow plugs and usually start OK.

They do something to the gas/fuel in winter to aid in cold starts.

I believe it. I had a fight with the Ducati importer and gas companies here many years ago. It was about carb freezing. I was told the antifreeze additives were part of the Northern hemisphere brew.
Some of our radiator coolants/antifreeze wouldn't rate enough for your winters.

A German mate told me how his Grandfather was on the Russian Front and they lit small campfires under the truck sumps during the winter.

That was the method loggers used to use to get their skidders started in winter.

Now they have quick connect fluid couplings built into the cooling system and just connect it to the pickup for heating.
