You do have the advantage of being able to buy just a bottom end, or a 916 and swap top ends and sell the 916 parts.

True, and that is likely the option our tech would recommend.

We have been thinking about dropping the engine ourselves and just taking that to the shop to save $$ on shop time.

Our tech quoted B $1k in labor alone, if he does everything.  

We do have an "extra" 916 engine, but not sure sacrificing a working, road worthy bike is worth it.  :-\
