for me this area died and started stinking in the 1980's...

work held me hostage to NYC at the time, technology and assignment have long since freed me of geography

when many of the old estates in the area were sold-off in the 1980's and 90's the high-density condo housing came in,

stacker and pack'em ....the community infrastructure, quality of life etc just tanked

the proverbial 10 pounds of shit in a 1 pound sack

That's an accurate discription.

We left before the chains of work became too strong.

It's funny how 90% of the people left behind don't see it.  It's not normal to: commute an hour and a half to work when the drive is only 15 miles, $26k in property tax is not okay because you live on a larger lot, 150' x 125', live next door to someone for nine years and not know their names or say hello to them...........

Rat can't be far from where you were.

Talk about an area that's changed.  Have you been on that road at 5:00 in the afternoon?

I was on it in the late afternoon with T and a friend headed to Manhasett. We sat through 3 or 4 light changes not being able to move.

I wouldn't live there for anything.

but...but....we have the MIRACLE MILE!!!

Nate...you don't understand!!!  you move here and baby you have ARRIVED!!...you are on the Nawth Shore, you are now posh, you must work on and perfect that "entitlement sneer" expression....

Manhasset itself is exempt from the overbuild issues due to the fact that they (deliberately) never put in a public sewer system...

they are all on septic that require leach fields

so the developers can't get the zoning altered for high density housing ........ no where to pipe the poop

but Manhasset is surrounded by overbuild so who cares

when the Grace family sold off all that estate property on Shelter Rock for condo's now Gracewood or Graceland or some such crap

I am not sure how they pulled that off..... unless half of that property is leach field

or is considered some other town like Manhasset "Hills" or something

I've know Peter Grace jr. for years what a maroon...the proverbial "stupid grandson theory" in full flower...

I'd kill people if I was subjected to that every day...

really.

I figured I'd arrived after the locals started talking to me here...

only took 10 or 15 years. ;)

I had a friend that thought he was moving to Norman Rockwell-meets-Currier & Ives when he went to NH

one winter his car went off the road and he was trying to flag down someone in the middle of a blizzard....

2 of his neighbors rode right past him....... but they did honk and wave as the kept going

he said the Yankees are the most hateful people he ever ran into   [laugh]

as a memory refresher you'll relate to this

When the state relegated me to pedestrian status...

coworkers would drive by me when I was walking to work.

I'm not sure if it was a Yankee thing or strictly personal ;D

The truth about the locals is once you get to know them they'll give you the shirt off their back.

If your friend kept his New York attitude...yes you guys have one...they'd let him freeze to death in the snow. ;)

I went for a swim today (on purpose)

swimming in a pool that is maybe 4 ft deep and 15 ft long is very strange. I kept kicking the step around the edge and whacking the part that makes the current.

i was also reminded just how out of shape i am.
Life, alas is very drear. Up with the glass and down with the beer!

Seriously, when i am 800years old i want to rock like Lemmy! it is a religion that requires lots of determination, drugs, and Marshall stacks.

I would like to swim, but would require me to get a bathing suit and wear it  :-\

All the snow and water froze overnight and we are expected to get more snow today. I actually saw a plow out yesterday. First time ever in Seattle.  I may take my coffee out later and watch cars slide around. I saw one parked car get hit 4 times in less then 15 minutes yesterday.

I find it disturbing that you're imagining me in a sauna, never mind the teletubbie aspect of it
