I may die in 18 seconds...

I'd rather be clueless.

Last big one I was on a train. Really sucks when you hear about 20 other alarms going off while the train is moving. We were just about to pull into the next station so when we did, we just sat there for a few minutes with the doors open, just in case. It wasn't too bad, right around 5.9-6.0 about 400 miles away...

I was on the subway (elevated part so not much of a "sub"way there) when that one in Virginia that could be felt in New York happened.
I got off and when I came down to the street, everyone was standing in the street. I had no clue why.

So what can you tell us about Japan after the disaster?  Obviously its not news worthy anymore. Just curious.

Luckily all of the really bad shit happened several hundred miles north of me. No tsunami where I am stationed. It was a huge change though. The Navy pulled out all of the ships in Yokosuka. 75% of the families took the voluntary evacuation. The base was a ghost town til early May. Radiation fallout was being detected everwhere (still is actually). We went on HUGE power conservation measures afterwards for about 6-7 months. No street lights, some facilities shut down, etc. It affected the produce we got somewhat, but the base imports a lot of stuff from the states. Local businesses shut down for a couple months. Some never reopened.

Now, you couldn't tell anything happened around here...

I think the worst part of the disaster was that there was immense coverage of the initial incident, followed by irrational pandemonium (fear of radiation on the West Coast, etc.) and now there is little to no news on the rebuilding efforts, which will take decades.

Really sad for all of those who lost loved ones (and the ones still listed as missing, per Japanese tradition), homes that they had for their entire lives, businesses, jobs, etc.  My understanding is that tsunami insurance is cost prohibitive in many parts of Japan, particularly the northern areas.  So for many, they lost everything and have nothing now.

I find it disturbing that you're imagining me in a sauna, never mind the teletubbie aspect of it

Definitely. I did however see something recently on discovery on the anniversary talking about the rebuild effort still going on. But other than that, the moment has passed and no one mentions it.

I can tell you every time we have a good one over here that's all anybody thinks: Is this gonna be another bad one.

I think the worst aftershock we've had was around 7.0
