Why does

"warmer"

and

"a few inches of snow"

seem so kinda oxymoronic to my alien brain?

Often when it snows the air temperature warms up. The system laden with moisture has a higher temperature than the more brutal cold that was previously in place. Some people would call this a class 1 impossibility but if you familiarize you yourself with the concept of the weather treadmill  your thoughts will soar into new skys of understanding.

I would like our current weather to take off.

Left sunny and 70 and am in gray and yuck in the mitten (forgot to bring a winter coat).  Got splashed (drenched) with mud from a semi while on my run.  Disgusting.  But on the flip side, I think I got 7+ hours of sleep last night so it was all worth it.   [thumbsup]

So... I get home tonight and Mrs Ung says.....

"the new pump is broken, there's no water........."

My thoughts in order:

1) make the beast with two backs.
2) The tank has leaked the remaining water away.
3) make the beast with two backs.

On inspection.... the pump failed to prime.   Main tank is still at 20%....

Pump has to lift water about 2.5 metres on the suction side from the main tank.

But our secondary tank provides flooded suction to the pump, and pump primed fine from there and functions normally.

Once primed, and during operation l switched back to the main tank, pump continued to operate normally.  No more make the beast with two backs  [thumbsup]

It just lost prime again.

My thoughts are:

1) air leak in the lifted-suction line from main tank
2) sticky/buggered foot valve (submerged) at base of lift-suction line from main tank

Am I right?

One would assume either of those scenarios.

I have seen pumps that just didn't have the nuts to operate on a good suction line and foot valve though.

If you have a means of pressurizing the suction line and seeing if it holds pressure it would tell you if those two items were OK.

The pump has 3x the nuts that the old pump had..... I dont think its lack of lifting grunt.  I certainly dont want to think that anyway.

And once I got the pump re-primed.... it continued to lift just fine.... for several hours.

That it functions (again) once primed makes me think its a supply line issue, if it didnt have the balls I reckon it would quit again right away.

The foot valve has been submerged on the end of that line..... for years...  Time to haul it up out of the water to take a look me thinks.

Try and find out if your well is starting to silt in while your at it. That could have an effect on the foot valve.

Its a 55,000 litre concrete rainwater storage tank.   There will be a little silt accumulated in the bottom of it (since I last allowed the water to run completely away  [bang]), but not enough to interfere with the foot valve which draws about 150mm above the base gate valve which still runs clean.
