Left overs: cheese burger, spinach/feta pirogi, and carrots sticks.

Sorry to hear about your dilemma Teddy.   :-\

What's the reasoning behind your MDs recommendation?

hey, L, and thanks

not my MD... my psychologist. she feels I should have a job that I find fulfilling and satisfaction in, not just a soul-rending paycheck in a dead end position.

Ahh. The Soul rending Dead end position. That will do it too.

The Radioactive waste thing was the first thing that popped into my mind.

She's a smart woman.

7 years is long time in the same position, not getting a promotion or anything.

Is there possibility for advancement where you are?

"your skillset is too important for production" is what I was told the first time I put in for a promotion outside of being the programmer

so it basically just became a job after that, not a career

Can they hire you an underling and make you "managing" programmer?

If they really want and value you, they should make a position that makes you happy.

No competitor to go work for?

I've been told they want to promote 3 more programmers to make a dept. again. but I've heard it before so I'm not holding my breath.  If that were the case, my seniority would def. make justification for a higher pos'n. either as a work leader, or a proper supervisor.

that's the beauty of hawaii's economy... half gov't, half tourism.  lots of service/retail jobs out there that don't pay shit, and I'm not in business or IT so not much to do outside of the shipyard (no real machine shops out there outside of mom and pop type shops)

DesmoDiva

Sounds like time for a frank discussion with them.

So do you work for the gov't or a private company?

gov't... DoD navy, specifically

DesmoDiva

Oh...  :-X

(That's what I thought, but wasn't sure)

That sort of changes things...

No mom and pops type places hiring??

not that I've seen... even then, most of the 'machine shops' were more automotive, not so much CNC fabrication like I do

you won't ever have that where you are.
