EverNing.

Duty day over.  Work day not.

A couple hours of light left!  Would be a great day for a pedal ride around the perimeter...  If it weren't for stupid knee!

I wish I could do without the crutches and sent them to Panama.
It's all in the grind, Sizemore. Can't be too fine, can't be too coarse. This, my friend, is a science. I mean you're looking at the guy that believed all the commercials. You know, about the "be all you can be." I made coffee through Desert Storm. I made coffee through Panama while everyone else got to fight, got to be a Ranger.

Its a lazy day. Dog is sleeping on the couch. The two baby sitting dogs are laying out on the lawn. We have the door wide open letting in the outside air.

Just like spring. I may go to bed soon, what the heck.

So the point of that movie is that Dad's tell sons bedtime stories.

Fifi came to town, went out with the GF and her pops to pay the ol' gal a visit.

She's a heavy drinker.
2.5 gallons of oil.
Per hour.
Per engine.
Each engine has an 80 gallon oil tank.
They've converted one fuselage fuel tank to an oil tank, IIRC, the guy said 300 gallons.

She's the only remaining B-29 that still flies.

That is a lot of oil. I had no idea.

There seems to be a lot of oil leaking all over the prop blade as well. Did they use the engine oil for that or is it hydraulic fluid stored in the prop control? I don't really know much about those old Radial engines.

I thought they'd have a decent number still flying. Kinda sad really.

The chap who was cleaning the engine nacelles gave me those numbers, and lead me to believe that the oiling was total-loss.
I was under the impression that shortly post-WWI, total loss oiling was abandoned.
My research today says the B-29 engines were dry-sump, so oil would be recirculated.
However.....
The engines on Fifi are hybrids assembled from two slightly different later model engines.
The original B-29 engines had a nasty habit of swallowing exhaust valves.
Given the very controlled flight regime on this aircraft, and it's nearly irreplaceable status, anything is possible.

Given nearly 4000 built, you would expect more left flying.

I think the reality is that the cost of housing, restoring, and operating this sort of plane is colossal.
IIRC, he said 100 gallons per hour per engine for fuel.
Given a 220mph cruise speed, that's ~0.5 miles per gallon.
So probably $10 per mile just for fuel.  :-\

They also have a MkXIV Spitfire and a Zero there at Camarillo.
Only 53 airworthy Spits worldwide, and 4 flyable Zeros.

It's a real shame that there's so few left, these were the zenith of prop-driven aircraft.

I've read that post WWII, one could purchase a brand-new Spit in a crate for 50£.

My pops said that when I was young, we saw a television program where they were crushing P-51's with bulldozers.
He says I was horrified (rightly so).

I hope that at some point my wherewithal to drop cash on a frivolous experience with match the going rate for a ride in a P-51 or the like.
