In Vegas, connection slightly delayed.

Congrats DD on the raise. :)

Randy, sorry to hear about Brian. :(
Is there anything in your contract with the breeder that covers genetic and health disorders?

As for Brian, he is still "under warranty" but translated, this means we can return him for a refund but there's a very high probability he'd be euthanized.  (Because he IS a commodity, right?)   >:(    Sarcasm over.

The issue is that he has patella alta - apparently unusual in dogs, more common in cats. Basically he was born with knee caps that are sitting much higher than where they should be.  We have a second orthopedic consultation on Friday.  Tuesday's ortho surgeon at the Steadman-Hawkins clinic of vet clinics recommended surgery right away on the worse of the two hind legs, reposition the patella, adjusting the growth plate (which concerns me) and I don't remember what all else.  Four weeks after the first, he'll do the other hind leg. Each requires 8-12 weeks of recovery.  In a crate.

The big concern is he absolutely cannot, not once, put total weight on his hind quarters.  Meaning, no jumping, lunging, absolutely no steps and stairs or we risk damaging the doc's handiwork.  (Tell a 9 month old Boxer not to do any of that.)   There's a bunch of other concerns and issues but these are just a few.

:'( :( >:( [bang] [bacon] [popcorn]  Thanks for letting me rant and vent.

Stella,

This worked pretty well for our 17 year old.

I believe they do rentals as well.

I was on that website the other night!  And then the visions of him getting used to it and going bonkers.  But seriously, thank you!  I'm sponge-like right now â€" absorbing anything I can get my hands on and this certainly helps.  How did your dog take to it?

Well being 17 helped a bit but after a few hours she was fine.

It was adjustable to let some weight or no weight on the back end.

At the very least it would allow him to excersise and get out.

It may even help speed recovery.

We have pretty tight quarters inside but it was great outdoors. It's got a wide base for stability and moves very easy.

Stella, regardless of the wording on the contract, have you spoken to the breeder? A very rare few will help with the bills, at the very least they should be thinking twice before continuing to breed that line.

((hugs)) to you guys.

Yes, I've been in contact with the breeder since Randy's been out of town.  She's genuinely concerned but we didn't (yet) get into any reimbursement conversations yet.  I think that will come after we have the next ortho consult tomorrow and make decisions based on everything we're learning.

An interesting comment she made was that it's not likely the dad that is throwing this genetic problem since he's fathered so many pups without having heard of any health issues so it's likely the pregnant dog but same as with the dad, she hasn't heard of any other pups with this or any other health issue.  "She's close to retiring but if it happens with another pup, I'll not breed her any more."     [bang]   Um, how 'bout you NOT breed her ever again?  You'll knowingly take the risk of putting another pup (and family) through all this?

I should be posting this in the dog thread â€" sorry all.

What's for lunch?

Thanks everyone!  Brian is slumbering away (and doing some serious tooting) on the couch and Randy (just back from a trip) and I are on the floor with computers (and gas masks).   [roll]

One of us will post in the dog thread after the ortho consult tomorrow.  Paws crossed!
