I know that I cease to exist once out of your sight. It's a really weird way to life just being in a ghostlike state until your presence nearby gives me a physical form.

What happens when the gnomes are all sleeping?

Or on vacation.

Or what if they're just short a few guys on a shift and the tree is too big?

They are, if anything, an overpopulated species so none of that is an issue.

With customers, or people I just meet I notice their shoes, clothes, grammar, etc.

If they have an office, I pay attention to what's in it.

Or what's in their car.

It's all a moot point anyway.  As soon as I leave, they cease to be.
