You feel safe that you are not getting knock off watches from them?  I had one experience buying a used Rolex online that turned out to be a really good fake, but a fake nonetheless.  $50 well spent to the jeweler who had to inspect it all the way to the serial numbers on the movement to find out it was fake.

I won't buy any upper midgrade watches from the interwebs, but for $100-150, why not?  It'll still be a decent time piece.  I do have a pretty good relationship with a jeweler, but even then they can "only knock so much off'.  For the Omega I want to get a used vintage watch that has some character.  T-Touch can be had readily for $500, and the Oris I'll probably pick up preowned from an authenticated dealer (most likely out of state on the web)
May your head gasket develop premature failure, your carb get gummed up, and your side stand fall short.

is there an easy way to spot a fake?
i found some uber cheap Seikos on Fleabay, but i am very skeptical of them

He's for real, his name is Mr. Yu, and anyone who says otherwise simply hasn't done their homework. His feedback isn't "pumped", he's really sold that many watches over the years. I'm a Seiko fan, and I'm sure I've bought some of my watches from him. His prices are that low because he does that much volume, and he can sell for those prices and still make a liveable profit.

Look up Poor Man's Watch Forum, Watchuseek, TimeZone.com, etc. Get a feel for the seller before you buy. There's a saying in the watch world, "Buy the seller, not the watch".

As far as mechanical watches being less accurate than quartz, that's completely correct...no mechanical watch, not even the finest wrist chronometers such as Rolex and Breitling, can hold a candle to even the cheapest quartz timepieces, as far as accuracy goes. That being said, I own nothing but mechanical watches...all automatics (an automatic is simply a self-winding mechanical watch). There's something about the symbiotic relationship with an automatic -- it "lives" off of my moment-to-moment activities, and in return it tells me the time -- no winding is ever needed, and no batteries to replace. I don't live my life to the second, so I'm not too worried about having to reset a mechanical watch periodically...I've got mine regulated so they generally run a few seconds per day fast, and once or twice a month I'll set 'em to the correct time again. If they're off any more than that, they are easily "regulated" by any competent watchmaker...it's a five minute process to regulate a mechanical watch, and generally only needs to be done once, after the watch has had a few months to "settle in" after initial purchase.

As far as a mechanical watch "running down" if you don't wear it, I generally rotate between two given watches on a day-to-day wear basis, and I'm active enough that the one not being worn will sail right through its "off day" with plenty of reserve to spare.

I thoroughly enjoy my mechanical Seikos, and so does my son -- we both wear Seiko Sport 5 automatics, which are made in literally hundreds of different models. The army and aviator style watches on Pokemonyu's eBay page all have the 7S26 movement in them, which is a bombproof self-winding movement made by the millions by Seiko. You can't hardly go wrong picking up on one of those for a beater watch.

[EDIT]  I just remembered another reason Pokemonyu can sell for so low a price -- he doesn't include a nice Seiko box and watch pillow in his prices. Those items cost a dealer additional money when they buy wholesale, and Mr. Yu just doesn't buy that sort of fluff. He does package his watches extremely well for shipment to his customers, just don't expect to get the fancy Seiko box and pillow.

ALL TRUE...however a COSC certified swiss auto and a good winder gives a quartz a close competition...you do pay 10 to 50 times what you would for a Japanese auto (Citizen Miyota Movements) in buying a COSC certified swiss auto....

I have bought watches from shopnbc. and Invicta and the quality is there especially for the price.

I got one of their Subaqua Noma 111s with a Valjoux 7751 automatic movement ( same movement that companies such as Rolex have used ) Retail $4,900.00 for $1,400.00.  Dolph

Unfortunatley I still want to pick up an Oris diver, a Tissot T-Touch, and an Omega Speedmaster.
[thumbsup] on the T-Touch. I've had mine for 5 yrs or so. Pay the extra for the titanium, it's too heavy otherwise.
I've got the T-Touch, a Tag 1500 series, Tag 2000 series, Skagen, a Hamilton Auto, Breitling Colt, Citizen Divemaster, and 2 Estana watches that I picked up on a trip thru Norway a few years back. I'm trying to stop, maybe I need a 12 step program.

While we are talking watches...

Breitling?  Overpriced or worth the $$.

I'm looking at the Titanium (LOL of course) Aerospace version.  ~$2700 in stores, around $2100 online.  Although I'm leary of buying it online, I'd hate to end up with a fake.  $600 is quite a bit of $$ to save though.

And before anyone goes off for spending that kind of $$ on a watch, it's going to be a gift to myself for become a FPL (full performance level) controller here at Atlanta Center.  Only takes (on average) 3 years of training :D [thumbsup]

Is a Breitling worth the $$? Yes and no.
There's the argument that a good watch will give a lifetime of use and enjoyment, and Breitling certainly makes a marvelous watch, and has the cachet of a Tag, Omega, or Rolex.
Then there's the argument that how could you spend so much on a watch when you could've just bought a Timex from K-mart and used the savings for__________.
                                                               Fill in the blank.

As an aside, I find it interesting that certain watches become favored by different groups of people, ie Breitling being preferred by pilots, Omega by sailors, etc..

I don't hold Tag in the same realm as Rolex or Omega. I had one. It broke. I'm gonna buy an Omega next.

Most Beitlings are fine time pieces (I own an Automatic Chronometer w, MOP face ). Breiling makes some timepieces for upwards of $100,000.

If YOU think they are worth the $$$ , then they are.

When I look at my Invicta Subaqua Noma 111 w, the Valjoux 7751 kalibre movement , to me it is every bit as well made as my Breitling or Rolex Sub Mariner.   Dolph    :)
