Seems like the first question I always get is 'How fast is it?' so I've been working on a response to that.

My standard answer has been 'I've had it up to about 100.'

My new answer is 'I can do the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs'

I laughed so hard my eyes teared up.  I'm totally stealing that.

I love it.  I have always tried to find an answer for this that wasn't just dumb.  I always feel stupid when I'm trying to explain to people that I don't like to go too fast on straight lines and that whipping around the twisties is much more fun.  I usually tell people that anyone and their grandma can go 150 in a straight line or wheelie on almost any new bike but real skill comes from cornering.

This is perfect.

I'm happy that you are all having a laugh, but is it in any way possible to explain this to a European  ???

Star Wars reference. Han Solo says this when asked if his ship is fast.

This is actually a better answer than it first appears.  I was looking up the wiki page for our uninformed Euro-friend and found this explaination.  So what you'd really be saying is that your bike straightens the corners.  [thumbsup]

QuoteThe Falcon is often connected to the Kessel Run, a pathway from Kessel past the Maw Black Hole Cluster used by smugglers to transport precious Glitterstim spice. Solo in A New Hope brags that the Falcon made the Kessel Run in "less than twelve parsecs". As this is a unit of distance, not time, different explanations have been provided. In the Expanded Universe, it refers to his ability to move the ship closer to the Maw's black holes and therefore cut the distance traveled. On the A New Hope DVD audio commentary, Lucas comments that, in the Star Wars universe, traveling through hyperspace requires careful navigation to avoid stars, planets, asteroids, and other obstacles, and that since no long-distance journey can be made in a straight line, the "fastest" ship is the one that can plot the "most direct course", thereby traveling the least distance.

...and I'm really glad I didn't know all of that before I looked it up.  :)

Sadly, I did. Only my explanation was a bit more technical. I know...this belongs in the confessions thread. :-[

another personal favorite is "don't you know those things are dangerous?"

this is a question usually asked by the kind of person who walks up to a smoker and asks the exact same thing...

QuoteNot a dumb question but... I had stopped at Publix to some food on the way home. I parked in the back of the lot away from all the cars. An older lady, sitting in her car, watched me the whole time. As I walked past her car, she locked her doors! She did it all "Office Space" style without lifting her arm. I laughed out loud right there. [laugh]

Sadly, that's happened to me before, but for another reason.
