I was there last May.  You're a brave person riding those cobblestone roads.  Most the bikes I saw had trashed suspensions for the condition of nearly every driving surface in that little city.

Actually, I don't live there, I just go there on some weekends since it is an excellent and very popular canyon ride for sportbikes - the S4R Showas just feel so smooth even there. You might be referring to local bikes (messenger type) which mostly are small 100-125 cc and yes, their suspensions take some beating.

Many of Italy's street in historical centers still has old stone pavement. My home town historical center (within the Roman walls) is entirely stone.
