Hey pjfa, I responded to your thread in the tutorial section on your 1098 fork upgrade, but no reply there.. I am going to do the upgrade next week.... Do you know if the 1098 Axle will work with the 696 wheel, or do I have to use the 696 axle and make the shims?
I got a decent setup of 1098 forks, with a lower triple and axle, so the less machining the better....
Hi, I answer there. Sorry for the delay

Hey fellow 696 owners
I have a few issues hopefully some of you can throw some insight into...
- I did my 1000km service myself (I'm a mechanic by trade) but from what I understand through searches is that the "wrench" service/maintainance light must be reset by the dealer. Is that indeed true? If so, is it going to affect my bike to ride it until I can get it to the dealer (my dealer is 250km away and our scheduals conflict). I'm just concerned with it causing the bike to go into open loop with the EFI or something crazy like that. Tjhe reason I ask is that the bike seems to be running a bit erratic lately (I have 2000km on it now)
- As I mentioned the bike seems to be running erratically lately... It seems to chug while running in town and is finicky, but clears up on the highway. My riding gear absolutely stinks like exhaust and the bike smells super rich. I'm guessing what I'm actually smelling is the product of the typical lean 696 issues and a lean missfire.
Not sure if this should be in the tech section, but I'm wondering if a controller something like a Juice box will help clear it up. If so, what can you recommend for a 696 that is basically stock except for half-cored cans and a K&N air filter

- the wrench doesn't affect performance. you can wait.
- you can't run the K&N without the Ducati Peformance ECU or Juice Box. Go back to stock and bet you wouldn't have the issue.

Thanks for the input Raux...
I got ahead of myself. The bike is currently stock. I intend on coring the cans this week and adding the K&N and was curious if letting it breath and adding some fuel with a Juice Box (or any other type of controller) would help with the chronically lean 696's (and possibly my issue). Also seems to be quite a dead spot between 3500-5000 rpm.
I should also add that the bike was a pig to start yesterday and flashed the SES light intil I keyed it down and restarted it wasrm... I may have messed up the starting proceedure tho and never let the ECU do it's initialization. I'll give it another try cold tomorrow...

As of now, the wrench must be reset by the dealer, hopefully someone figures finds a method that can be used by the owner. As Raux said, the wrench will not affect running.
Before doing any modifications you need to find out why your bike is not running well. If the check engine light is not on you are not running open loop and, as far as the computer is concerned all is hunky dory. Obviously, all is not. First thing I would do is make sure the vacuum hoses (yeah all two of them) are intact and connected (assuming you didn't do a canisterectomy). Then I would check my sensor connections. Also, pull your spark plugs and inspect. If your bike is an early '09 it may have a reversed coil polarity issue. Search the board for more info on this.

The bike is a new 2010 model with approx 2000kms on it.. I wish my TECH2 scan tool and CANDI module at work would plug into this thing....maybe pull an updated fuel map down from TIS and upload it...LOL...I'm a GM tech...
all connections and hoses are routed and in new condition. To me it smells like it's lean..I have yet to pull a plug to confirm. Basically I'm assuming it is lean and from searching I have found that a lean condition on the 696's is a common thing...
Now assuming it is lean....what is the fix?? Juice Box?

Juicebox will work because it allows you to add fuel during acceleration and at wot... However it does not have "maps" like the power commander and you cannot finely tune it... It's bassically ride, adjust, ride, adjust and so on until you get it where you want it... The powercommander 5 is now out and probably the best way to adjust the ecu to your setup.... I've been running the juice box and it works but hard to know what the best setup is for it without an air/fuel gauge

First off I would start a new thread in "Tech" with an appropriate title. Then ask a Mod to move the appropriate replies to that thread.
Back to lean. If your bike is running properly in closed loop it is running stoichiometric ratio (14.7:1), just like your GM cars. The older Monsters with the single O
2
sensors did often run lean trying to maintain stoichiometric ratio To lean for smoothest running? Yes, but the bike should run decent, though a little hot. I don't know about the new Monsters with the Siemans FI, but the older bikes ran closed loop up to 15% throttle or, if I remember correctly, 5K RPM. Unfortunately, there is not much more you can check on that bike yourself. You could check throttle sync. If you have access to an exhaust gas analyzer you could also check CO balance. I think anywhere around 1% should work. You could also try partially blocking the air intake and observing whether the problem gets better or worse.
Your best bet, IMO, is getting the bike back to the dealer. Particularly since the bike is new, under warranty and not running correctly. With the DDS tester, Ducati's equivalent to your Tech II they can get quite a bit of data, though no where as much as is available on OBD 2 cars.

Good to know
I see the new generation of juice box has all the features of the powercommannders and a little more...

Now if they would just make one for a Ducati...

I have a four gas analyzer but no access to a dyno so my burble under light load would go un-noticed.The bike actually runs quite well when you get it out and wring it out...just finicky in traffic. The more I read it could be just the nature of the beast...
Sorry for the hijack, but i guess in a roundabout way it was asking about an accessory and modification since I was asking about a lean fix....which seems to be a ECU mod...

Yep. I've got the same symptoms and was told by my mechanic to live with it. The DP ECU/Termi kit clears this up; I've witnessed the transformation on another 696... it's essentially a different bike (and, at 2K installed, it better be).

If the problem you are having is surging, chugging and jumpiness at low rpms then that is just the nature of the beast... I had the same thing, for what I can tell these bikes hate low rpms and love to be ridden hard.... However, when I installed the juicebox it did help with the low end surging and uneasiness with the engine

Giving the bike a bit of throttle at 3K will cause your bike to "chug" and is normal. A DP computer or an interface to make for a mixture in this range will help, as will shifting one gear lower, or a sprocket change, like -1 tooth on the front or up 2 in the rear. I think I read more into your post than was there and had a more serious problem that jrecently developed.
