Very cool.  8)

You can do it on yourself too. Years ago I was home alone, and hung over as hell. I was in the kitchen, standing in front of the sink, and went to take two or three aspirin caplets (the long and skinny ones). I popped them in my mouth and damned if one didn't fly back and lodge right where is wasn't supposed to. At first I panicked (being alone) and then "dove" onto the counter edge and out popped the pill.

Scary stuff, choking.  :-\

nice work  [thumbsup] i'm sure your friend will remember your quick thinking forever.

i choked on a piece of steak at my 8th birthday dinner.

my family thought i was reacting to the horseradish.
they did nothing, and i ended up trying to leave to find help elsewhere.
i didn't make it far, i had no idea what to do...
instinct kicked in, and i leaned over a table, and the steak came out.

that was probably one of, if not the most, scariest experience i've ever had in my life.

Nuh uh!!  It said broken ribs were a "side effect" on Wikipedia

;D

Cartilage and breastbone always break during adult CPR.  Choking, as Cyrus said, does not break ribs.

I didn't read that on wiki.

I watched a xxx (fill in the blank to adhere to rules) break a friends ribs doing the heimleich back in college

I choked on a plum when I was younger and my mom had to do it to me.  My dad didn't even notice, he thought it was the cat coughing.   :-\

I flayed about at first missing the mark, but after I found the location just under the rib cage, the steak came up and out. My dog ate it, which was great comic relief. I immediately thought about the what if's, like what the make the beast with two backs did people do before we understood anatomy, and what the make the beast with two backs would we have done if no one present had training. Man what an event, I brought it here to keep everyone involved anonymous, but it shook me up big time. I love that make the beast with two backsing guy and his face was pretty miserable, won't soon forget it.

But yeah  [beer] and [bacon]  resume as normal!!

The last american red cross cpr training i went to said not to even bother w/ the hymlic anymore.
Go straight to CPR.

No more 30 - 2 either. Just as many as you can do in 30 seconds and then 2 breaths.
No more two first over the navel, just somewhere in the chest.
Break ribs? Oh well, they''ll be alive...

*shrugs*

but good job.

Not being trained in CPR...They were choking.

What good are the breaths doing if the airway is obstructed?

Must have been American Heart Association, not Red Cross.  Our curriculem is set and used nation wide by all RC instructors. if it was a Red Cross class, the instructor should be fired.  If you have questions PM me.  I work for the Red Cross.

You are right Nate.  Conscious choking is no call for CPR.  5 Back blows then 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich) repeat until the object shoots out.  CPR is for dead people.

Yup, you can use the back of a chair too.

BTW, if you are eating with someone and see them put their hand to their mouth, quickly get up and go to the bathroom, try to make them talk to you.

Some people get embarrassed when they are choking, but going off on your own is dangerous if you are choking.  People die that way.

If they can talk to you, they are not choking.

And props to the OP for his quick actions. [thumbsup]

If a person is coughing they are not choking.  Encourage them to keep coughing.  When they can no longer cough they are choking.  Get consent to help, have someone call 911, and then help.

[thumbsup] to the op for quick action.  Somegirl is correct that many choking people go to the restroom.  Guys at restaurants go outside.  Follow them.  They may be to panicked to help themselves.

I feel like I am at work, so this all on this topic for me!

AHA curriculum is pretty standard and Adam is right. It's currently 30/2 with a rate of about 100 compressions per minute.

Back blows are only used on infants and toddlers.

Heimlich maneuver is used until the victim goes unconscious, they they are lowered to the floor and chest compressions are done.

This is per the current BLS for Health Care Providers curriculum.

Red Cross teaches back blows for adults, children and infants.  It is our standard for health care providers.
