False Neutral?

I have about 720 miles on my S4R T.  So we are still getting use to each other.

Last night on the way home, I shifted from Second to Third, but I didn't give it a very positive/solid up shift and I went into a false neutral for a second.  Before I clutched, down shifted, and then went back up.  Everything seems fine, but I thought I would ask.

This normal?

At 720 miles, everything's still pretty tight.
The trans will loosen up a bit with some mileage.

Partially technique too, you need follow-through at the lever, just be a little more deliberate.

You'll likely find a false neutral between 5th and 6th, especially if you hurry the shift on a freeway ramp or the like.

False neutrals are not all that uncommon. Word of advice though, always upshift when you hit one. Keeps from over revving the engine.

It's "normal" - Ducati style "normal"

I avoid it by following the advice I got a year ago, as repeated by Speeddog above [thumbsup]

I've always wonder, why does everyone use false neutral to describe this?  It is in neutral, so it isn't false.   :-\

I consider a false neutral to be when the neutral light comes on, but the bike is still in gear.

False neutral describes the neutral condition that occurs anywhere but between 1st and 2nd.
'IZ_' neutral describes the neutral light being on and the bike in gear. had that happen adn it tossed my bike on the ground during warmup with old style spring kickstand (99 monster) before i replace the bolt.

Never believe the dummy light or you're a... dummy...  ;) False neutrals aren't uncommon. I was once riding home on the freeway and spaced out and purposefully put the bike into false neutral between 4th and 5th at the end of the offramp. When the light changed I downshifted into 4th thinking it was 1st and killed it.  [roll]

The end is in sight! Gotta buckle down and get to work!

I tend to agree. It's not false, it's a real true neutral. There's a true neutral between every gear, it's just that between 1st and 2nd they're designed to be easier to access.

Do you have a better way to describe it?   not everything we say means exactly what it litterally means. "like throwing a rod"

Unintentional Neutral? I don't know. I never worried about it too much, but I guess you have a point.

Speeddog

It's a false neutral, as it's not *intended* for the trans to pause in that position.

The actual neutral between 1st and 2nd has a detent, it's designed to pause in that position.

I get a yes from 5th to 6th occasionally too.

Do you wear tennis shoes when you ride?

Do you have adjustable rearsets?

I occasionally get yeses when I wear soft shoes but I have adjustable rearsets that puts the lever tight on the hard boot, and I never get a yes with my Sidi's on.

And yea, I'm being a dick   [laugh]
