2009 mb SL 65 AMG  :o :o :o :o

One of the smartest moves Mercedes ever made was buying up AMG, at the time an outside Benz tuner, and incorporating it as the tuning division of the brand. This gives Mercedes a lot of marketing clout and provides a needed spice-up to the brand as compared to its rivals over at Audi and BMW who both enjoy a more sporty image to their mainline models.

The AMG Mercedes SL 65 Black Series comes with AMG's own 6.0-liter V12 bi-turbo engine, developing 493 kW / 670 hp at 5,400 rpm. The torque is electronically limited to 1,000 Nm from 2,200 to 4,200 rpm lest the car's burning wheels burrow themselves right into the ground and leave you stuck in the melting asphalt.

The SL 65 Black Series comes with a five-speed automatic gearbox with four drive programs: C, S, M1 and M2. AMG claims the M2 setting has a response time 20% quicker than M1. I guess the letters stand for Comfort, Sport, Mucho-fast 1, and 2-wice as Mucho-fast, respectively.

There are also three suspension settings with the ESP ON, ESP SPORT, ESP OFF/Let's tempt fate.

This SL 65 AMG also sports an impressive 2.79 kg/hp weight to power ratio. Hey, that's like asking a horse to carry your laptop, isn't it? It's light as air. Or maybe we shouldn't trust my sense of physics which comes mostly from watching cartoons.

The press release comes with a litany of details. Enjoy.

When I was at Road America last summer, one of the participants brought his CLK63 AMG Black to the event.  It was his 'backup' car - the brakes in his Carrera GT were having issues.  :o [laugh]  He got black-flagged in the CLK, too -- the stability control sys was causing his inside rear wheel to smoke in the corners.   :-\

Neat car, though.  This SL65 looks like a terrific machine.  [thumbsup]

Oh I know. They are extremely well built and classy cars. But, the looks for the money doesn't equate for me. I'd much rather have a Porshe, Koenigsegg, R8...

Yep the AMG cars are really fun.  Rode in an E63 AMG last summer, and I could totally get along with that program.  [laugh]

problem with the car is first its an automatic, a true sports car should at the very least have an automated clutch actuated by paddle shifters, and then as an option have a proper manual, afterall what is the point of an automatic?  that takes all the fun out of the car experience.

second, the car is way too heavy, like all benz its too heavy, they need to actually make that inot what it should be a stripped down car for true enthusiasts that weighs maybe 2800 pounds tops

the 320k price tag puts it a little out of the range of a m3 or an s4......or an R8
