Driving is Not a Secondary Activity

Another sad story, my heart goes out to the friends and family.  This story could be replaced with any activity that people seem to think takes priority over actually paying attention to the road.

Man, this really gets me heated.   How in the make the beast with two backs could a 46 yo woman think it is a good idea to paint her finger nails while driving.  I hope she goes to prison for a long time.

Hey, she wasn't talking on the cell phone.  Goes back to what the real issue is, people not even trying to pay attention or using common sense.

RIP, Anita.  Condolences to those who were close to Anita.

disgusting.
i haven't been riding very long... but it only took about 1 year of riding a motorcycle to completely change most (not speeding, yet...) of my driving habits...
I rarely even answer my phone while driving now, let alone doing something as idiotic as painting my nails.
I can't count the people i see every morning reading a newspaper while driving 50+mph on the parkway on the way to work, or doing makeup in the visor mirror... People are just morons.

Saw someone this morning paying bills - literally writing out checks on the steering wheel and stuffing the envelopes - while driving. We were in a bit of stop-and-go traffic, but c'mon people...

i won't get started on this.

but sad to say but the woman will probably get probation and pay something like a 100$ fine, no jail time.

the thing i have noticed is that you can kill someone so long as you use a car and the otehr person is on a bicycle or motorcycle and you can get away relatively scott free.. reason = juries identify with drivers not motorcyclists or cyclists.  as far as they are concerned we shouldnt' even be on the same road.

that person taht was killed was someone's mother or child.. do you really think jail time will actually "teach a person" a lesson?  i don't.  its sad, but hopefully what goes around, goes around.  that is all i'll say.   [laugh] [laugh] [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

Drunken Monkey

This is one of those areas when the punishment needs to exceed the crime.

I want a punishment so severe that people drive around in mortal terror of killing someone.

As they should
I own several motorcycles. I have owned lots of motorcycles. And have bolted and/or modified lots of crap to said motorcycles...

LA

I wish driving while brainless weren't so common.  My ex-wife, an otherwise bright and dear person, would adjust the radio, dig through her purse, apply makeup, light and smoke cigarettes, and THEN worry about driving - all the while on Valium.  I used to tell her even if I didn't care for her, with I did, I was worried about the station wagon will of kids she might kill.

If one caused a fatality like this 46 year old woman did while under the influence of even a small amount of alcohol, they would do serious jail time.  I don't see the difference.  It's disregard for the life and limb of others either way :'(

How can the punishment exceed the crime? She killed someone plain and simple. IMO she should be charged with negligent homicide.

The problem is bigger than what action is taken against this person.  As LA pointed out, if alcohol or drugs were involved, she would be in trouble big time, even if it was not the cause of the accident and that public sympathy is not with you when you are on two wheels.  Until there is public awareness the problem will not go away.  Motorcycle safety funding needs to go towards public awareness, not "safety checkpoints" where tickets are given for infractions like loud pipes.
