i'm going golfing with my future father in law this morning for the first time. i don't know if i should try to beat him.

First off, your assuming you can beat him.  What if he beats you like a red headed step child?  And what if he's all juvenile about it.  How would you feel about him?  Do you want to be that a-hole?

Gently beat him if you're better than him.  At the same time be yourself and play a good game.  Golf sometimes is more about how you play rather than who you're playing.  

If you do play better than him just ignore his game.  It's bad enough what you're doing to his little girl.

I wasn't suggesting he go out there and show him up. That is a real dick move. That's one of the reasons I quit golfing; I am not very good and use to just have fun, but it became way too competitive for a thursday night after work with some beers.


But purposely playing worse so the other appears to be better is wrong.
