Good gin in a good martini is the closest I come to sipping the stuff (which is pretty close, but not quite -- I don't have a pathological fear of vermouth, but I don't overdo it, either). Real Dutch Jenever, on the other hand, is a totally different matter.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenever

If you can lay your hands on some Oude Jenever and you're tempted to mix it with tonic or commit some other obscenity, please, PLEASE give me a call and I'll take it off your hands. I've never been able to find it in the states and have been hoarding the last couple of shots of the bottle of Korenwijn I brought back from Amsterdam years ago for a really, really special occasion.

we only pick up Perrigans when we are abroad..

Don Julio Anejo. Have you tried their Real?

Triple J

Tequila is usually bottled in one of five categories:[6]

Blanco ("white") or plata ("silver") â€" white spirit, un-aged and bottled or stored immediately after distillation, or aged less than two months in oak barrels;

Joven ("young") or oro ("gold") â€" un-aged "blanco" tequila, blended with rested or aged tequilas, and often with caramel coloring, sugar-based syrup, glycerin, and/or oak extract added so as to resemble aged tequila;

Reposado ("rested") â€" aged a minimum of two months, but less than a year in oak barrels;

Añejo ("aged" or "vintage") â€" aged a minimum of one year, but less than 3 years in oak barrels;

Extra Añejo ("extra aged" or "ultra aged") â€" aged a minimum of three years in oak barrels. This category was established in March 2006.

Personally I prefer high quality Silver tequilas...I'm not a fan of the flavors that aging produces. Then again, I'm not a big alcohol drinker...and I actually hate Scotch and Whiskey. I tried, but...

i'm the opposite... but I came from scotch, so the oak brings some familiarity to me...

I'm a big tequila fan and will chose it over another liquor anyday. I am pretty picky as to which ones I like. All the Patrons are junk IMO. I have become a fan of Milagros recently with the rested being my favorite. One that really suprised me and I would definatly buy again is the Jose Quervo platinum family reserve. Sometimes the oak flavor of the anejos are too strong for my tastes.

i gotcha, to each his own.  some people drink pga straight and poopoo it if it's not good stuff... rofl..

try aged tequila, like an extra anejos variety and see waht you think.  people are usually surprised, it tastes nothing like the blanco stuff.

i have had "the good shit"
her stand by is don julio anejo.
if she has to resort to drinking cuervo 1800 she's upset.

she has given us a few bottles. the ones that i could actually finish a shot glass of have been oro azul and she let me try her don julio real.
she is a complete snob about her tequila.

this turned into a alcohol thread! woo hoo!  [thumbsup]

As my namesake implies...i'm a rum drinker.

Dark rum.

I have a cheap bottle I bought while down in the caribbean, but I think it came from Bermuda. Called Gosling's Black Seal. It's cheap but very tasty...i'm sure you can get it here. I just haven't finished the bottle I have.

I also bought a couple bottles of Appleton Estate special reserve stuff while we were in Jamaica. I'm sure it was probably just something they threw a special sticker on to sell to tourist (like me). It is good, but not as good as the cheapo black seal  [thumbsup]

If I can't have tequila my second choice is whiskey.  A while ago one of my customers brought me a bottle of this.  It was very very good.

I worked in Mexico for almost 2 years. We mostly only drank Don Julio Anejo. What most people don't realize is that tequila in Mexico is sipped. Anyway, I have nopt tried Real, but a friend has and he mentioned it was great.

I sip all my tequila. Chilled or on ice. Never could shoot it very well.
