If anyone could help me this would be great!
I bought an 05 monster s2r 800 from a guy.  Originally I wasn't going to purchase the bike because he only had one black key for the system.  I told him I'd buy it if he replaced the ECU.  So he did.  I road it and checked it out.  The ECU seemed to have no problems as far as I knew.  It did stall frequently and didn't ride smoothly so at the time of purchase he took another $300 off.
I bought it...took it home...and it still continued to stall and not run great.  When I took it to the dealership they informed me that the ECU was not for a monster at all but for a multistrada.  They suggested I replace the ECU...but I really don't have the money to do that.
Will the multistrada ECU be a problem for this bike?  Any insight would be great.

I'm pretty sure the multi was never an 800. Def cause for a lot of problems.

You could bandaid fix the situation w/ a custom dyno-tuned pc3, starting w/ a map from a multi.. It would end up costing you  around $500-600 all said and done.

perhaps it's time for a DP ECU specific to the S2R 800.

good luck

Thanks.  I'm trying to figure out what to do while spending as little money as possible.  I just want to be able to ride the bike without problems...and I obviously don't want to do damage to the bike.

Can you post up what markings are on the ECU?

Do you have a red key?

I do have the red key.
The ECU says "MTS 1000"

Very good that you've got the red key.  Smiley

If that really is an MTS1k ECU, yeah, it won't run well.
Ducati isn't particularly diligent about properly marking the ECUs, but likely that's what it is.

Options:
You could buy the DP ECU, if there is one made for the S2R800, has to be a virgin unit.
Or, an aftermarket Ultimap/FIM U59, those are fully adjustable and very nice. Not a lot of folks around that can tune it.
The *proper* S2R800 ECU, but it has to be a virgin unit as well.
Maybe another option or two, but I think that's it.

Could you get the original ECU back from the guy who sold you the bike?

I don't know how much they are, usually the 'kit' where they come with the cans is a good deal.

Check with your local dealer first for price and availability.

I unfortuntly know how much they are.
The ECU fried out on my m1000. The DP ECU alone was $1300.
I refused to be raped by Ducati like that so I opted for the U59 and mapper software.
So for less $$ I now have a fully mapabale ECU.

Lucky you. Sad non OEM ECUs not good for Stepper motor bikes.
If you can go this route, i would do it in a heart beat. its like a DP ECU and PCIII in one. you loose your immbolizer though. and you can get whatever custom gauges you want, if you want. =D Plus its tuneable by almost anyone.

One check to see if you do have a mts1000 ecu will be to see at what rpm the limiter kicks in at. the 1000 (and 1100) motors are lower than the 800 motors.

I cannot remember the actual numbers but I bet you can get a few .... dozen DMF'rs to test theirs out for you. applause

You might see if you can sell the MTS ECU and put the proceeds of the sale towards a new, correct, ECU.
