Hi all,

Has anyone ever ordered a copy of someone's military records from http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html ?

I submitted a request a few months back and they said it'd take 3-4 weeks, but it's been almost 8 weeks and I've not received the records I requested. I'm curious if anyone has any first hand experience and can verify if it may be taking a little longer than they say. If there's a problem with the request, will they respond or simply ignore it?

Thanks,
SJ

I got replacements for all my medals.  It took longer then 2 months.  It is my understanding that you can not get a copy of your actual records.  You can get verification of time served, medals awarded and that is about it.

Am I wrong?

Woohoohoohoo! Two personal records! For breath holding and number of sharks shot in the face.

My dad requested his records ~6 weeks back and hasn't gotten anything back yet.

Bureaucracy. :P

If you're in the military you can view your record online. Granted, it's not always up to date

I am actually requesting my deceased father's records. It'd probably be easier if it were my own.

You can get the seperation papers, medals, and not much else.  Veterans too can only get the seperation papers.  I want my APR's and the actual records.  I know where I served, what rank I was, etc.  It was so long ago, that I want to see what was said my my commander and shop chief said about me.

About to find out how bad it really is.

I remember trying to get a copy of my DD214 @ a year after I got out. =  [bang] [bang] [bang] then.

Now, after being out for almost 16 years, I am going into the Guard...  Let's just see what it takes to get old records.
It's all in the grind, Sizemore. Can't be too fine, can't be too coarse. This, my friend, is a science. I mean you're looking at the guy that believed all the commercials. You know, about the "be all you can be." I made coffee through Desert Storm. I made coffee through Panama while everyone else got to fight, got to be a Ranger.

Wow.  Joining the gurad!  What will that mean for you?  Will you deploy?  What MOS?

I've been mulling it around for a while myself

I thought about it several years ago, but by that time I thought I was too old.  Reconnected with a friend of mine who is now O6 at Ft Carson said that with prior service it would not be a problem - almost like I never left.

Going back in as W2

153A - I get to fly again!  The only thing that matters.

If the unit deploys, then yes, I go with them.

I've thought about it as well, but after three shoulder surgeries, I couldn't pass the physical challenges  :-[

the DD214 request is online now.

the records for someone else requires items like death certificates etc to prove someone is deceased. also, depends on his records. there was a fire in St. Lous a number of years back that destroyed most of the records and the subsequent mess after makes it hard to find older records.

also, you can check with the VA directly if he was a disabled vet.
