So, if one were so inclined, and felt enough inner fortitudeness, to undertake a 6k service on an air cooled twin, say, oh, I don't know.... a Monster or a Sport Classic, what should be performed, and what exotic precision instruments are necessary?
One would assume, it goes without saying, that it would involve an oil change, clutch fluid change, brake fluid change, check brake pads, look for things that are loose but should not be loose...
What else?

I'll bite......Realizing this is totally tongue in cheek:

micrometer 0-25mm
dial caliper 0-150mm
beer, for the loose ones you have to buy
knife sharpening stone for tight shims
manometer or mercury carb sticks for TB balancing
the old board (for a cool excel program for shim calcs)
patience
patience
oh yeah, patience

And a sense of humor ...clearly something lost od me...

letsee, on top of what you got, valve clearance adjustment etc,

you'll want to readjust your belts (although valve clearance adjustment is easier with the belts off anyways)
reset your TPS
balance TBs
check chain tension

if you like, you can check your throttle cables and your steering head bearings

special tools:

use an impact driver to get those pesky crank cover bolts off, don't try to do it by hand, you'll strip em
engine turning tool (you can make one on the cheap if you don't want to buy a real one)
shims and shim measurement tool
I use only a set of calipers to measure my shims, but whatever you choose to use
angled feeler gauges (angled makes it easier)
something to hold the top of the valve in place so it doesn't fall in
magnetic pick up tool makes pulling half rings out easier
something to depress the rockers (I just bought the purpose made tool made by EMS, but used to just use a screwdriver being careful)
some kind of sync tool (I use a digital vacuum gauge now)
fluke for the TPS reset (depends on model of bike though as some TPS can be set manually, some have to be done using software)

maybe an extra 5mm screw to block the oil galley hole when you're pulling your half rings so they don't fall in there

hiero,
I am so going to bribe you to come "hang out at the lake" for a couple days.
Just as soon as my tools aren't hogging up the guest bedroom. Embarrassed

Does this still work?

Reset the MAINT light:

Hold down the left button. Turn the bike on. Release the button.
