All the FI 900s are air and oil.
You sound sure.

I wasn't. ;)

I coulda sworn I saw an air only 900 injected model. :-\

If we go that route, then it's the 696... Other wise it's the 1100 if you count oil as lubey goodness and not a liquid.

why the 696?  It uses oil to cool the heads also, it just doesn't have an oil cooler out front.

I'm not versed in 696 tech - can you explain that?

Well, there's a pack of 900s running around here locally from 2000+ and they all have oil coolers. Mines a 2000 900Ie and it's def got a cooler.

I did see photos of a 900 where they had a different cooler that was larger and had been moved way back under the rider seating area. It was pretty slick, but look like a lot of effort.
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

I think we're confusing some folks by calling the engines "oil cooled."  Any engine that runs oil is cooled by that oil.  If you drained the oil, the engine would overheat and seize.  Most Monster engines have a little radiator in the front for the oil to disipate heat.  The water cooled engines have a second, much larger radiator for the water/coolant.

Exactly.

Oil is used in all engines, therefore it is neglected as a cooling agent due to its commonality.

Radiator = liquid cooled

No radiator = air cooled

Engineernerd time - the air cooled monsters are also liquid cooled (oil), just not water (anitfreeze) cooled.

But the liquid is air cooled     ;D

No, the metal is air cooled. The oil transfers it's heat to the metal...

Instead of arguing air cooled vs liquid cooled, wouldn't it be less confusing to argue air cooled vs. water cooled?  If you have to add anti-freeze/water to your bike, it's water cooled (S4R, etc).  If you only add oil in your bike, then it's air cooled (the rest of the Monsters).

Oil is a lubricant. I don't consider oil as a coolant unless there is a jacket around the cylinder wall to effect heat transfer to the oil.

The early 900s had that jacket. I'm pretty sure the later ones did not.

My 2000 (ie) has oil pumped through passages in the barrels, the '92 SS has external oil lines but the return still goes through the barrels, and then the cooler (I think)

On the monster, when you look in between the fins is the depth the same all the way top to bottom or is it the same as the SS?
