Monsta, how do you hold the bolts securely while grinding and buffing them?

With his teeth.

Sincere apologies, for some reason it was the first thing that came to mind and I couldn't help myself.

I use a file to take of the knurling and radius the head and,  same as Rob S, I hold em in the chuck of a drill while at home. I have a cheap pedestal drill at home (tho, I used to just use a pistol drill like Rob). I use a lathe at work with a profile tool.

Then use a bit of emery or wet n dry to smooth before holding them in my hand and polish with the buff.

easy peasy...  but time consuming..

Hey Monsta

That is Anal  even i don't polish the stainless bolts laughingdp.
But if you are i guess i will have to as well. Roll Eyes

I even have my own engineering work shop /tool room 3 lathes and all the crap.
But i like to just tinker at home  and take my time, i tend to rush it at work soon as i start on the bike some one will want something.bang head

Good idea to radius the head. waytogo

I just bought some stainless cap screws last week and they don't have the knurl and are finished square and smooth and bright they look real good straight up. Smiley

Thanks to Rob my eyes are now wide open to the poor state my zink plated alan head bolts are after a year of all weather riding and living at the beach
soooooo......... I have now started to replace them with high quality stainless
The result is  well worth it   waytogo
so far I have only spent $20 and the convenience of having STAILESS R US 2 minutes from my house means every time I find another tarnished bolt its gone in 60 seconds.
Rob has also offered to re-plate (over a few drink) some of the other fixing's
So no its not anal Rob and thanks for the motivation
the devil Evil is in the detail.

OK, I've had enough of this thread. As people keep dragging it up to the top you need to do something Rob ... I've had enough.

Can you please add an 'o' to the thread title ... and while you are at it ... a question mark too.

Is that anal enough for you?

Don't apologise to me ... I was having similar conversations with Mostro ... bike looks good!

Can we have the equivalent of a fondue party at Rob's nickel plating garage?
