Be sure to tip your waiter or get arrested =)

I agree with ^^^ about not expecting a lot but expecting service.  I can see if my server is having a rough day and that's no problem at all as long as they're making some effort.

One of the posters on the review site made a great point.  If your waitress/waiter is guaranteed 18% because of the size of your party, then what's to stop them from completely ignoring you in favor of the parties of 5 or less?  Worst case they can figure they potentially lose, what, 2%?

Two questions occur to me; why weren't their six friends also arrested, and how the f*ck do 8 people eat for $73???

No, I'm not that stupid, they split the bill. let's see how many replies this one gets.

Two things to be learned from this article.  Gratuity is optional, and don't make the beast with two backs with the Sopranos

if you don't do your job well, do you get rewarded or do you get in trouble?

well, where I work, you kind of do get rewarded  [roll]

anyway.

I am also not a fan of mandatory tipping. and, like travis, I've gotten flak for tipping up to 50%

I tip well for good service, cash only.  I put it in the server's hand if at all possible.  Bad service?  You'll get gsomething left on the table, but *maybe* 5%-10% or so.  Example?  My g/f (now wife) and I ate at a place called Isla.  Bill?  Spendy.  Server that checked on us, talked to us, made our dining experience worth the expense was tipped about 40%.  Had the service sucked?  Something, but very small would have been left.  Waiters & waitresses EARN their tips.  I'll happily tip well for good service, and excellent service earns a really nice bonus.

At the restaurant I work at we add a "suggested" gratuity of 18% for parties of 8 or more. I'm sure everyone here is very generous and yes a tip is supposed to be for good service. You'd be surprised how often it happens though that when a bill gets to the table for over $200 that an according tip starts to look bigger than the paying party likes.

For your guys info that 18% breaks down like this:
1%=food runner
2.5%=hostess/bussers
.5%=bartenders
14%=server

That is actually the main reason for gratuity on big parties, if a guest gets cold feet and only wants to leave the minimum a server could get really screwed after tip out to everyone and working really hard. As it is the 18% you can see doesn't even get the server to walk with 15%, it just keeps them from doiing you a service and getting shafted for it. Just wanted you guys to know that when you tip, or if you stiff a server on a tip. I can actually cost a server money to serve you. Mostly we have to tip out on sales, it doesn't matter what we make we are expected to chip into the pool from our sales.

Another thing don't bother going out to eat on a Sunday if you are still pissed about tithing. You'd be amazed how often someone takes their family out to dinner after church and wants to leave you a 10% tip(if that's all Jesus gets you're sure as shit not gonna get more). If your dinner for 6 cost $100 and you leave $10, thanks. I just spoiled you and your brats while you were taking up two out of 3 or 4 of my tables for an hour and a half for $6 after I tip everyone below me.

Mostly just understand and recognize what level of service you're getting. If you want a really nice dinner, go Monday through Thursday. The servers are better, the diners are better, Friday through Sunday is amatuer hour. Servers dealing with rude guest who weren't taught proper etiquette when eating out. Monday-Thursday nights I make almost as much as a weekend night with about 60% of the sales.

And if anyone is curious, no, I'm not a Denny's server. Yes I'm good I usually walk with at least 18% after tipping out my 4% to the pool, and that is in a state where a large part of the population doesn't ethically believe it's right to tip a white man.

Oh and if someone didn't want to pay the suggested gratutity, nothing we could do. Don't know how the laws are set up there that they got legal on it. Here it is merely a suggestion for you to do the right thing and left to your discretion.

Often, when dining with a large group I find the need to run back and put a few extra bucks on the table.  Seems the problem is some people estimate their share a little low.

I dislike combining the bill with a group for this specific reason.
