Pre-project checklist and fact find
«

I'm considering a custom build of my current S4. Wanted to get some feedback of do's, don'ts and waste of time and money. Really want a Super Duke R, but $16K is out of reach for now.
So far this is the project list:
Frame repainted (sourced)
wheels repowder coated (sourced)
Forks replaced Ohlins, or new carts/paint (sources mod suggestions?)
engine painted
New speedo/tach (the Moto...from Germany, link anyone) also can the guts of the speedo be boxed and moved?
916 engine mods, see sig of current, what else is possible/worthwhile?

The guts of the speedo can be repackaged and moved.
I'd recommend regular paint for the wheels rather than powdercoat.
Engine mods, how much do you want to spend?

thanks for the quick reply. Heard that paint would be better. Engine mods, maybe $2K

Some folks have fitted SPS cams, and seem to like 'em.
Most of the power gain is way up top, so you need to ask yourself if that's what you want.
You could fit an S4R or ST4s motor.
With those, you get the wide-ratio transmission, which is a very good upgrade all in itself, IMO.

Whats the average cost on each, any links?
Also, is this the kit needed to change to a bar?

Dunno cost of SPS cams, they're getting rare.
I've seen S4R and ST4s motors go for ~$1500 or so.
For bars, easiest to get the upper triple from either:
'02 and later regular Monsters, 7/8" bars.
S*R for 1 1/8" bars.
I think there's aftermarket upper triples as well, more money tho.

The SPS cams should range between $900-2000, depending if they are new or used. I picked up a new set for $1200 not too long ago.

change the sound much? Engine swap sounds more likely

Definitely gets a more snarly with the SPS cams, idle gets a little lumpy.

Want lumpy idle without spending $1200 on a used set of cams that won't net you much?
Install the corse exhaust springs, or just leave the springs out altogether. Lumpy lumpy lumpy, and $1200 more into your pocket.
Also, skip the remove the guts idea and just get the immobilizer removed from the ECU. Get a spare plug for the gauges (or use a different one), and start shopping at motogadget
Maybe motocreations will have the "switchlets" out by then ?

I've got the SPS cams in my 01 S4 and it bucks and kicks at low idle, but pushes hard when opened up! Not worth the price when you can bolt in an S4RS engine for 1500ish

Look at the cartridge fork kits rather than Ohlins forks.
There's the 25mm ohlins and racetech and the 20mm traxxion, and a 20mm gas charged traxxion. you can get 'em anodized gold if you want so it still looks blingy.

THAT is an excellent point. And also why I'm thinking about dropping this 104mm (999r) motor in my s4r/testa...and then stuffing the testa motor into that st4 I bought...LOL muahaha. OK, I stop now.

sps cams shouldn't make any difference to idle quality or low speed running. but if a 996 motor is available at those prices then there's no point doing anything to the 916 motor. you'll need a full system or st4/4s header and muffler set up to get the top end power it offers tho.
