LED vs LCD TV

OK...here's a question for all of you who know more about electronics than I (not hard to do  [cheeky]). We're in the market for a new flat panel TV. 37" is the largest practical due to space constraints. 32" would also be plenty big.

So, a 37" LCD is about the same price as a 32" LED. Is there any technical reason to go with the smaller LED?

Also, any brand recommendations? If we go LCD we're most likely going to get a Samsung LN37B650 since it was rated highest in Consumer Reports. No idea what brand makes the best LED though.  ???

Thanks!  :)

If you go with LED, look at the LG.

funny thing about LEDs that i noticed  while back when shopping for a new tv , its too clear ... Its so clear u can tell the movies being shot in a studio  :-\ ... i was deciding between LED and plasma, ended up getting plasma ... i dont know maybe its just me, but my nephew thought the same thing. They were playing IRON MAN at the store, and we both sat there for a good half hour before realizing that it was too clear, if there is such a thing ...

I've found that some movies and shoes look odd on new TVs with a really fast refresh rate.

A bit like you're in the studio watching the actors, versus watching a show?

That's completely accurate. My dad recently bought a Samsung 55" LED and it is too clear. I feel that there is no filter between myself and the actors/scene, whereas with my LCD, you can tell you are watching a TV show, there is a slight softness to it. It's a completely different feel. I don't like the LED for TV, but I brought my Xbox over one day and I loved it. I would go to the store to check them out, they have huge differences.

But to clarify, LED is LCD. LED is just the backlight, compared with the standard fluorescent (CCFL)

I noticed that with a pair of old boots as well...

The real shame is that I'm not drunk, and can't blame that on anything.

it is strange when you can see the actors make-up! they must be hating it.

Thanks everyone.  [thumbsup] Leaning towards LCD now. We'll ofcourse go look at them and compare...just wanted to make sure there wasn't some great reason I should be wanting an LED.

the LED backlight will be more uniform (across the screen) and be more consistent (brightness) over it's lifespan.

LCD vs LCD+LED backlight? the latter, for sure.

so let me get this straight the reason why people are getting the led is because it has a better sharper picture, but the reason why you guys are disliking it is because the picture is "too good" ? wtf?  that's ironic.

its sort of like saying "i want a supermodel wife, but she can't be the best looking woman around" wtf? if she is a supermodel she is supposed to look like the best woman around.

There are things I prefer to watch not in HD.  I get the 'too clear' thing.

This is just image reproduction.   A little blurring is often a good thing...like a proffessional photographer shooting with certain filters.

to each their own.   [beer]

Consumer Report isn't as objective as they want people to believe. Check other reviews as well.
