Since I've gotten all of my parts ordered as of today,  I figured I'd start a Rebuild Thread for my '08 s2r 1000.

A bit of history:
I bought my s2r1000 in the summer of '08 from PJ's Triumph and Ducati brand spankin new.  I went in to look at the 696, but immediately upon sitting on it I knew that I couldn't possibly ride that bike.  My Man Parts just couldn't handle it.  Sitting right next to the red 696 I sat on was a red/white sr21000.  Sat on it, fell in love.  My heart melted when we took it outside and fired it up.  I thought I sounded better than the 696 with termis.  Bought it that day, cash (from a starter loan for up and coming millitary officers).  I had to let my bike sit for a whole month, scared as hell my brother would get to it before I could since it was at home in NM and I was training in San Diego with VRC 30 (Providers baby).  I rode the hell out of it the other two months though, and realized how happy I was that I had ridden dirt bikes since '95.

Up comes DiTR '08.  Went up to Ouray for the day, since I had to head back to school the next.  I saw one of the High Desert Hooligans (here's to you Zaster!) imitate superman from 20 feet behind him on a hairpin turn at the base of Red Mountain Pass.  Everything was well and good until I was riding back home that night. Went down on a blind turn that wasn't marked.

I put the bike back together with used parts and rode the hell out of it when the weather was good enough in indiana.  Rebuild included some machine work to replace posts on the clutch drum until a new one came in.  Replaced the windscreen the next summer with DucMouse's and proceded to paint the bike Pearl White with a Cobalt Blue stripe down the middle.  My own version of an American Tri-Color.  Got the parts back from the body shop the day before DiTR '09.

Show up late at night at DiTR '09, and procede to go out the next morning.  Rode all day untill sometime late in the afternoon when I went off the edge of a steep hill as a result of a downhill, left-hand, decreasing radius turn that I chickened out half way through.  I don't remember much after lunch until they took my neck brace off around midnight, but the bike has been out of commission untill then.  The right side of the bike was beat up pretty good.  Exhaust was beat up, hell Cat mount was broken!  Right side of the handlebars snapped off with my throttle and master Cylinder and switches.  Windscreen was destroyed.  Rear Cowl missing.  Right fork scratched badly and fork seal may work, but isn't what I would call acceptable.  Tank is gouged pretty badly, but I'm gonna see if it holds fuel and doesn't bubble the paint.  Seat cover is ripped.  Carbon fiber panel below the seat on the right side was destroyed too.  Finally, my new Clutch Cover from the last incident was scratched badly, but saved the clutch.  Go PauliMoto billet half-cover! Paint on frame is beat up.  Everything else seems ok.

Fast forward to December.  I get my commission in the Navy.  Ensign 1390 (Student Naval Aviator).  Pick the bike up from new mexico over x-mas and put it in a storage unit here in Indiana.  Officer pay has since been used to feed me, buy gas, pay bills, and buy Motorcycle parts.  And so the re-build begins.

Current Parts List:
Right Foot Peg - $0 already had
Remus Ti GP full exhaust (BMW of Fresno) - $1450 (Christmas Present!)
Clutch and Master Brake Cylinders with Pazzo levers from '05 999r compliments of DesmoWorks - $250
Rizoma Clip on and Top Triple kit (DesmoWorks) - $400
MotoDynamic Integrated Tail Light - $75
Throttle Assembly (Indy Ducati) - somewhere around $80
Right side switches (Indy Ducati) - somewhere around $75 I think
Windscreen from first incident (needs Paint) - $0
Brake/Clutch Lines (Indy Ducati) - I'm assuming $200
Rizoma Reverse bar end mirror (MotoWheels) - $140
Rizoma Bar Ends (MotoWheels) - $70
Competition Werkes Tail Chop kit (MotoWheels) - $120
RH CF Side panel (MotoWheels) - $70

Work to be done by someone other than me:
Paint (local)
Seat Upholstery (local)
Fork Seal / Respring (Indy Ducati)
Rear Respring (Indy Ducati)

For paint I had a few ideas, but I finally have decided on a simple Flat Black and have the frame touched up at the body shop.  Hopefully it can be done without tearing the bike down.

I still want to do something special on the right hand side of the tank to recognize that it has a scar there... any ideas?

Just got the Rizoma Clip On's from UPS.  Damn that is some impressive billet!



Now to get it mounted so I can wheel the bike around easier.  That, and feel how the brake levers suit me.

My speedymoto frame sliders stopped my bike from looking like that when I tossed it in the weeds(bang head), now is the time to get some!

For the first get-off... yeah.  Frame sliders would have helped.  The second one was a little more intense and no so much sliding as flying.

Maybe you should also use some of that officer's pay and take some MC courses.  WIth the way you keep throwing your bike off the road, I fear the worst.

Honestly, I don't think there is anything a MCS course could have taught me that would have helped in the first incident.  Sharp unmarked 90* turn right after the crest of a hill... hell, it was around midnight and i was going the speed limit or less watching out for deer.  My biggest mistake was riding late at night in the mountains/foothills.  The best thing about it? I managed to notice a drop off about 40 feet ahead of me and had the sense to lay the bike down instead of trying to ride through it.  Saved my life.

The second incident... a course probably would have given me enough confidence to knuckle under and push the bike over more and  possibly save the turn.  On the other hand, that might have caused a low side into the guard rails ending in multiple serious fractures or death.  As it stood, I rod through most of the turn and when I got to the shoulder you can see (from the tire marks in the ground) that I was sliding it sideways dirt bike style which resulted in a gentle rolling over the hill instead of either shooting straight off resulting in death, or low siding into a rail also resulting in death.

Both situations were errors on my part to begin with... but I feel like I did quite a bit to save myself from the worst once it happened.  And, of course, your gear will save your life.

Bars mounted with brake and clutch levers.  Levers aren't hooked up, still waiting on lines, but I'll probably get their switches wired in in the next week.

Looks great, but may I suggest dropping the gauges below the triple. When I put clips on mine, the gauges stood out like a sore thumb, until I dropped them.

I'm thinking about it, but I'm also thinking about how I can mount a GPS in the space left from where the risers were. Then, if I put the windscreen back on, it should keep everything looking in proportion.

I should have been more clear.  I didn't mean a BRC, I was reffering to a Total Control Class or California Superbike school.  SOmeplace where they teach you advanced riding techniques.

Wasn't disagreeing with you either way, there's a lot I can learn... just thinking about the what if's for each scenario.  As of now, just happy to be alive and well enough for the bug to keep biting  [moto] waytogo

Might pick up an SV and use it for track days in addition to such a class

A friend has a ball head bolt instead of one of the Rizoma clip on bolts on his Monster. He puts his GPS on it. It's not dead center, but maybe close enough.

Larson:  the bars themselves are threaded in, so I don't assume a standard replacement bar would work unless it was threaded... whether a replacement bar could be threaded or is too thin is beyond me.  I don't know if rizoma sells just a bar, but i would assume so.

Stopintime: Thanks, that looks like a good option right there.  I'd hate to have to drill and tap a new hole(s) to mount a gps.
