I went through the engadget live blog of the event.

so...I refuse to buy one. What is the use of a tablet computer for browsing the web if it still can't run flash  [bang]

I'm sorry steve, but it isn't the WHOLE internet and the best web experience if you can't go to any site that has flash.

first of all, flash needs to go away...

secondly, i've been doing some testing at work with 64-bit windows and the lack of flash (support for 64-bit browsers) hasn't hindered my browsing experience one bit. in fact, one could argue that the lack of invasive flash ads has actually improved it.  ;D

native html5 video will soon replace flash video players... complex user interfaces never should've been written in flash.

basically, the lack of flash isn't a deal breaker for me... it doesn't seem to bother (a majority of) the current iphone users, either...

I don't understand why you would buy this for reading books.

How about a Kindle or Nook?

They are cheaper and specifically designed for reading books with a killer battery life.

Now......I can see Statler's justification as it would work very well for his job.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

The top of the line Kindle 2 is only $10 cheaper than the lowest level iPad. However, the Kindle DX for $489 comes with 3G, the iPad with 3G is $629. So, if you're willing to pay another $150 for web browsing, there you go...

I don't understand why you would buy this just for reading books.

How about a Kindle or Nook?

They are cheaper and specifically designed for reading books with a killer battery life.

fixed that for ya...

i know people that were holding off from buying a kindle/nook to see what the ipad was going to do.

the ones that were originally considering a kindle/nook are treating it like a $260 discount on the ipad.

if you just need an e-reader, the ipad isn't for you... if you want an e-reader with a larger screen (than kindle/nook/iphone/itouch), the ability to run other applications, browse the innernetz, watch movies, listen to music, etc., the ipad isn't such a bad deal.

The new Kindle DX has the same size screen (9.7") as the iPad. Just saying. It still can't run apps and browse the net. I have no interest in an ereader or the iPad...

My wife just bought herself the one that Barnes and Noble supports (I think the kindle? Who knows), but it is backordered for over a month.

She compared both models and went with this one, can't recall her logic. I think it came down to more free books and broader support for other formats. It seemed like the Amazon was limited to Amazon only.

I am happy with my Blackberry for portable wireless needs as I can read the news or check my facebook, send a quick picture, whatever.

Anything else is what my laptop is for. But that's just me.

Yup. My BB is fine for what I do. I don't think the iPad will fill any existing niche. Not for what it can do and for it's size.
There are 10" netbooks out there that will do everything the iPad does and then some, with lager storage, considerably lower price, while sacrificing a bit of thickness...

Netbooks are getting much better in terms of battery usage. So, yeah, it sacrifices "a little" battery life while being able to accomplish much more...

While I won't argue that flash needs to go away....

the fact is, that it's still every where.

first two examples that come to mind off the top of my head.

I can't pay my VW loan over the iphone...their site is flash.
Can't check my favorite weather site either (usairnet.com aviation forecast)....flash.

yeah it sucks...but it's still out there and in use. Plus I like flash games too!  ;D

i think they are appraoching this the wrong way. Pad technology should aim to replace netbooks completely, not fill a gap.
