Well heck, you can't get *all* the gas out of the tank anyway. Theoretically, you can never run out. Given that, I ran it dry on the way home from zeitgeist. And I'm close to Rob, who wants me to work on his bike, Therefore I win.
Now bring me my bacon and yer wobbly sidestand issue, because it'd be a shame if I was hungry and yer bike fell over.

ive never come too close on the ducati since it has a nice little yellow warning light. but in other stuff, i have come really close and sometimes too far. i have run dry on my ktm 2 times now (no reserve on the petcock, just on/off but a new petcock with reserve is only $28), and in my car i put 12.4 gal into a 12.5 gal tank. then there was this one time i pulled into a gas station in my moms ford ranger, i killed it and it wouldnt start because it was out of gas even though the tank had just now gotten to the E line. i ran out in my camaro when i was 16, and not too long ago i had my dads truck stumble coming away from a red light so i made a quick turn into the gas station.

When I ran out.....it's cause my little yellow light stopped working. There's one sure way to decide it's not working. I wouldn't trust it.

I ran out of gas on my old honda right before reaching the peak of the bridge I was on. I learned many things that day. My mechanic likes to use my gas (dropped it off with half a tank), none of the emergency phones on that bridge work, emergency bridge services noticed the problem and only got to me once I was off the bridge, and pushing a bike made in 1965 up hill for 1 mile to a gas station on a summer day in leather really sucks.

Some homeless person fixed it when I sputtered into the gas station and I gave him the Bacon. I guess I win

I was pulling into my future xbf's apartment complex and noticed that the bike was running like poop. I can't see the idiot light in the daytime and I just happened to glance down at my trip odo to see that I was at 159.3 miles as the motor gave its dying gasp in his driveway.

Sounds like my *way too fast* blast down a deserted stretch of divided 4-lane highway on the GS1150 I sold... As I rolled off the throttle, it didn't sound right, it didn't respond good, and started running like crap. In my mind, I'm going "dammit, this is a 23 year old bike, what have I killed..." Then, remembered it had a reserve tank & I reached down and flipped the petcock over and a couple minutes later it ran fine ~

Had it cut out while rolling down a steep hill to the gas station. Got to the bottom of the hill and it started up and I half contemplated carrying on. Sense got a hold of me and I filled up.

Ran out of gas in a 12-ton diesel freightliner idling AT THE PUMP. Rolled up, put the brake on, and it died. Looked in the tank and it was DRY. I put in 42 gallons of diesel at about $3.00/gallon, ouch.
With a full load in the back pushing was NOT going to be an option . . .

I dont remember how much gas i put in the tank but i have "ran out" of gas on the highway. All of a sudden, the engine cut off while i was doing 85-90 in the HOV lane of a 4 lane highway. I coast down to around 50 and hit the starter to try to start the motor(let me tell you, changing lanes UNDER speed is NOT something you want to do when all the cars are going 20-30 mph faster than you). Im able to get it to start back up and I slowly throttle it up the exit ramp. All the while im thinking i would really hate to push the bike up the ramp. I ride (not coast, engine was still running on fumes) into the gas station.
Does this count?

I've done that twice on the highway on my KTM. It took me a while to find neutral so I could flip the reserve lever over.
Didn't freak out at the time, but afterwards I realized that being on the highway at 60-70 with no power and fiddling with little levers under the tank isn't the safest of positions to be in.

I know what you mean but think about running out of gas when you have the reserve switch engaged. What do you do then? Our monsters dont have a reserve switch, its basically holding in the clutch, repeatedly pressing the starter button and hope you have enough speed , gas (more like fumes) and room to switch from the HOV lane to the lane that will get to you an exit ramp.
At least with a reserve switch, you have to option of tapping into more power (tapping into a "reserve" gas source). It is a whole lot more comforting to know you have an option that will allow you to have access to enough gas to get to a gas station. To run dry and run on fumes, your options are now considerably limited.

I've been lucky so far, I usually start mad gas station hunting on the monster at around 120 miles, whether my fuel light comes on or not.

I usually do the same. If i remember correctly, it ran out at around 130ish miles from that one tank of gas ( figured I had at least another 10 miles of gas left). I usually fill up when i hit 120 miles and know that i have roughly .5-.8 gallons of gas left. I was heavy on the throttle that particular week and it only lasted 10 miles over the 120 mile limit that i usually follow.
