Cafe build...beginning?

Here is what I've got so far:

999 frame
999 mono subframe
999 tank/seat
S4rs swingarm, that is broken.  All the parts are good, but the arm is tweaked and probably not worth saving
1098 forks
1098 triples
999 stem

999 radial master cylinder

What I don't have:

headlight/1/4 fairing
Wheels
rotors
calipers
lines
and a motor....

I can built the exhaust easily, and fab up whatever else I might need.  Thoughts were to use the sssa from a s*r, and loose the suspension linkage, weld a mounting boss to the swingarm, and mod the frame for a direct setup.  Another idea is a older 900ss aluminum swingarm, but the sssa is "cooler".  Yet another idea is to find an arm off a 696, but I have yet to see one FS (and will probably be $$$ to put a complete setup together).

Thats what I need help on.  Looking for a 2v, simple, clean, and light.  Can't decide between a carb'd 900 with single short manifolds, or trying to piece together a 1000 or 1100 motor from ebay.  I'm a bit leery of that, because the little wiring bits that you may not get can nickle and dime ($50/$100) you to death in a hurry.  I don't need a zillion hp, just enough to have fun with in the mountains, and take to the track.

I admire a LOT of the work that takes place on this site, and welcome the thoughts and opinions of everyone!  Input requested!

I don't know I can offer any advice but my thoughts/preference would be a DSSA
I do love the SSSA but on a Cafe bike DSSA and low pipes just rock.

Other than that, I'll just wait and watch what kinda magic you come up with.

While you're at it.... dual external rear shocks, a la Sport Classics or Triumphs.

696 arms are popping up on eBay constantly as I've seen 5 or 6 sell already and less than $150 in almost all of the cases.  I'm sure if you keep an eye out daily you could pick one up soon.

Alternatively, SC swingarm with the dual shocks?

Superbike frame, air-cooled Ducati motor, and S2R swingarm.  I think of Radical Ducati.  Will your bike be anything like these?   Will it be hard to match the 2V engine to the 999 frame?

I wouldn't try to piece together a DS1000 or 1100 from ebay when you could buy the whole engine.  DS1000's are often listed for $2K or more.  900's are generally half of that.  However, here is a DS1000 with broken motor mounts for $899 on eBay right now.  This may be something you could fix with your welding skills.  Add a set of FCR's from CA-Cycleworks (because it's not my money) and you will have yourself one of the baddest air cooled Ducatis of all time.

Been speaking with that guy about the 1000 motor....When I said piece together, mainly talking about getting the motor here, wiring there, ecu, from somewhere else, etc...

Only concern on that motor is the way it broke, and how would I be able to weld on the bottom side of the mount (can't).  Would it be strong enough if I did the sides...I'm unsure.
The mounts I've seen/welded were along the sides where I could get to 100% of it....not so with this one.

And yes, something like the radical ducatis....without the 2K tank and tail....I'll make my own tail and use the 999 tank/seat.
I did find a built 750 motor that made 83 hp on the dyno.....  thats a bit more than a stock 900 w/carbs iirc.    Then again, a carb'd 1000 motor would be cool....  I'm unsure how I would control the timing, but I'm confident it could be done.

I just mentioned that damaged 1000 motor because it is the only one I've seen for under $2K and knew you might have an idea if it was usable.  I saw one for less but it was missing parts like the clutch.  Chris at CA-Cycle has a DS1000 for sale for $2K.

If you were to build an engine, I wonder if a 1000DS top end would fit on top of a 900 bottom end.

I'm not sure, but I don't think that would be a bolt on.

Like this exhaust, want something  similar. Only options seem to be ExBox to get a different look. Very nice bike.
