What to do in NYC

Since my brother turns 30 in April we decided to take a little vacation to NYC.  Neither of us have been there so I'm looking for some suggestions.  Any tips on where we should stay?  What about restaurants, bars, attractions, etc?  I know it's a general question about a city jam packed with everything, but I'm hoping you can help me out.

Last time I was in NYC, we stayed at the Edison.  It's a block or so off of Times Square.  It's a consideration, but you'll have to work out transportation from your arrival airport. 

We did Times Square, all the attractions like Empire State & Statue of Liberty too.  All was walking or a reasonable taxi or subway ride ~

We've stayed at the Gramercy Park Hotel a few times - it's in a great location near the Flat Iron District and if you stay there, you get access to Gramercy Park.  The Washington Square Hotel is cheaper and in the Greenwich Village area.

If you've never been there, one of the best things to do first off is to take a Circle Tour boat ride around Manhatten.  It'll get you oriented and give you the best views of the skyline from every angle.

A lot of people get mugged and stabbed-it's the quintessential NYC experience.

Nothing.  There's absolutely nothing to do in NYC.

Where are you staying and what do you like doing?

Plenty of karaoke clubs in k-town.  There is a very cool japanese bar/club that's hard to get into.  But then again, that's japanese.

Do you want to see touristy stuff like the Empire St Bldg or real stuff like DUMBO?

IMO, NYC is the greatest city on Earth.

Just one warning, if you see that famous National Debt Clock, watch out.  It's due to explode at any moment.

We haven't decided where we're staying yet.  I would like to do some of the touristy stuff, but I also want to find the hidden treasures (little restaurant with the greatest food, hole in the wall bar packed with hot women, etc).  Money isn't a big issue as we both have well paying jobs.

i say stop by mcsorley's. order a round of light and a round of dark.
look at the place and then move on. do this on a weekday though. weekends are tough to get in.

The best steak I have ever had was at The Post House at 28 E. 63rd Street.  Pricey, but worth more than it costs imo.  Classy joint; best service.

Also what national debt clock are you talking about?

if you want good food. really anywhere you go is pretty good. But your not going to find hidden treasures in the city without knowing the right people who will take you there. theres a reason they are unspoken of. The big thing is, most hole in the walls are just that, hole in the walls. So dont be disgusted if its not hte prettiest place in town.

also if you see a big ass digital readout on 14th st. people say thats our national debt. it isnt. its an actual clock.
