Anyone get the iPad yet?

I checked it out at the Apple store for a few minutes.  Initial impression -  [thumbsup]

my opinion is favorable but I haven't gotten my hands on it.  Probably will not buy one because the cheats at Apple and ATT want me to buy another broadband when I already have one on my Iphone.  Can you simply replace the SIM card for it to work?  I've read they were coming out with new ones to prevent just that.

My wife hasn't put her 32gb one down since it arrived yesterday.

She got the wifi only version as we both decided the one with the Air Card capability is just not worth it.

Her primary reason for purchase was for book reading, but also for photography.

she is getting into doing family photo shoots, weddings, etc. So now in her her camera bag, she can carry the little I-Pad to show pictures instead of lugging her MacBook around.

I'd have to say.......it is pretty impressive.

Can you copy PDF documents to the iPad and use the book reader ?  Let me know if you get a chance to try that.

No, but you can use the PDF Book Reader.

They have 100's of free books and you can get new release books for 6$ and thousands of book for $0.99.

Overall, this was bought for a book reader for my wife. She looked at the Kindle and Nook, but decided to spend a little bit more on the I-Pad.

what's the deal with Adobe flash player and Adobe in general with them anyway?

Got mine yesterday, and it has been passed around from me to my wife to our friends constantly ever since, excepting time for sleep.  I'm an Apple fanboi, but it doesn't disappoint.

Initial impressions: lighter and smaller than I thought.  Very fast and responsive.  Plays 720p video smooth like butter.  Browsing rocks.  Keyboard is surprisingly good, coming from iPhone.  Easy adaptation for me.

Killer add-on apps for me:

Air Sharing (use it as a network storage device, directly copy file to iPad from any browser, plus displays PDFs, Office docs, images, videos)

Air Video (stream videos from my home desktop machine to iPad anywhere, with automatic conversion from most formats)

Comic Zeal (load and view cbr and cbz comic archives, but also any PDFs)

Overall, it's  [bacon]

iPad doesn't play Flash, as you probably know.  Opinions vary about the wisdom of this.  There seem to be a few different camps:

1) Flash is the de facto standard for web animation.  Whether it sucks or not, or should die or not, is immaterial.  A tool that purports to be the best browser experience ever should support Flash.

2) Flash sucks, and its great that Apple is showing the way to HTML5.  We don't and won't miss Flash.

3) Flash is great.  Apple is insane.

As an experiment, I installed ClickToFlash in my browsers at work and home about a month ago.  This intercepts and disables all Flash content.  Turns out that I didn't miss it much.  Occasionally I found myself clicking through to see the Flash underneath the ClickToFlash blocker, true.  But only occasionally.  Mostly I found the absence of annoying animated banner ads to be quite soothing, and loading times much improved.  Overall win for me.  So I guess that I'm in camp (2) above.

If you're not sure whether you'll survive without Flash, try ClickToFlash or something similar for a few days.

I'll try that then.

Also explain to me what Air Video is?  I have a Mac for my home PC and love it.

anyone know this that there's no contract for 3g service?  If I'm going on vacation and such and don't want to pay hotels $10/day for WIFI I can sign-up for 3g service directly through the Ipad (horrible name BTW) and turn off immediately too.  It also tracks the amount of usage so you don't go over.  This little feature doesn't sound to bad i think.

They're gonna call it the maxipad.

Can anyone with iPad try this

-- add to your iTunes Library a PDF document  [File > add to library > select PDF doc (yes, you can do that )]
-- create a smart list ( Kind contains PDF )
-- then see if you can sync it to iPad and read it?

That is one thing that is critical for me to know before possibly getting it  (well maybe 2nd generation).  I have tons of PDF books (tech books) that I would like to be able to read on the iPad I suppose.

Are you familiar with ATT's "3g service" on Air Card Devices?

I've been through 3 generations of ATT 3g devices (all USB Models) and they all make the beast with two backsing blew.

Note: been all over the country with it and in a few foreign countries. Worked better in foreign lands than domestically.

Just my $0.02 on their service
