Btw they make a app for almost everything, you want to edit some heavy docs they have a app for that. If you want to remote admin your PC they have a app for it, if you want to make a artist tablet out of your iPad they make app for it :) 1000 iPad apps at launch and 150k iPhone compatible apps right now.

I would need an app to sort apps.

iPad will not replace a laptop... Yet :)

Sure it can.  If most of what you do on your laptop is browse the web or watch videos.  In other words, compute passively.  I am not saying that is a bad thing, I just want to make the point clear.

It does look like a miracle device compared to the poopoo oh I mean joojoo.

See: "sad tale"
This device was conceived to be a touchscreen netbook, priced around $200.

The fact is most people who dislike apple with continue to dislike apple and rather pickup a joojoo than admit apple makes some of the best user experience products out there. I am by no means a apple fanboy. I hate how they lock down there memory, battery etc but I have to admit I still have not picked up my laptop since I bought this device.

The fact is that most people that like the iPad will continue to like the iPad rather than admit the device attempts to do a lot of things, but doesn't really do a even a few key things all that well.  Browsing?  nope.  It uses the iPhone browser.  Video playback?  Any format except flash.  The book store uses DRM.  No multiprotocol chat clients.  The thing doesn't even have a functional alarm.  All cognitive iPad dissonance will be answered with things like:

.. yes, at $4.99 or more apiece.  You can buy at least $5000 dollars worth of consumer-level software for your iPad.  The abundance of software does not compensate for the need to buy much less the cost of the software.

Sent from a iPad :)

Look, it is hard to argue with "It works for me."  Go forth and compute in good health  [thumbsup]  Also, still curious about how long long it is taking to type things  ;)

It is unfortunately easy to argue with "it will replace your laptop/desktop/netbook/iphone/other"  On the user level that depends on how much non-browser or non-video time time you spend, but functionally, it will not.   Overall, it seems like Apple aimed a shotgun at a target called "tablet PC" and pulled the trigger.  Where were you aiming Apple?  Where you see the little holes.
Assuming that the lack of focus and functionality has something to do with Apple's hubris, I find myself in the odd position of hoping Apple fails with this.  (I say this as an OSX fan and Mac owner of several years.) :-\

Really?

Doesn't even do a few things all that well?

I must be using some special Ipad no one else has :)

Look... I am a PC person. I never owned a MAC before so I don't worship apple by any means but I am really enjoying this device.

Btw many apps are free and with in just a few days I can type almost as fast if not faster on this iPad than a keyboard but maybe because I have the hands the size of a Childs :)

Really.

You'll have to re-read my posts if you think I am making a case for Mac worship.

And I truly do hope you continue to enjoy it...

is there a problem w/ the iphone browser?

possible alternatives on the way: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/23/opera-mini-browser-coming-to-an-iphone-near-you/

The book store uses DRM.

*gasp* say it ain't so!! what's the problem? if you want portability, buy a paper book.

i don't get your point... should all software be free?

ok... so what did you want the ipad to be... an intel proc, full osx, real video card... uh, a macbook without the keyboard, right? at the expensive of increased weight or reduced battery life, right?

The iPhone browser is displaying the mobile version of many sites for iPad users.  It is not tabbed, does not allow you to back up to a specific place in your browser history, et cetera.   In short is is not a fully-fledged PC browser.  It is a great phone browser, but not a great PC browser.

Because there are alternatives does not mean that DRM does not fundamentally suck.

The good answer to "this device doesn't have the capability and probably should" is not "someone may sell you an overpriced fix for that".

Finally, what I wanted was a touchscreen netbook running a scaled version of OSX*.  There are linux distros for netbooks by the plenty.  It doesn't seem like a mountain too high.

There are few problems with this device that can't be fixed with a real OS.  I hope you enjoy your iPad too :)

* edit: with the same hardware

all things considered... if my wife were to buy me one... say, as a gift... I would play with it... surf this site on it... perhaps some others... all while on the couch watching TV... I wouldn't replace my laptop with it... but I wouldn't return it for a refund either. It is what it is.

I was really hoping someone would dress up as Moses on "Ipad day," buy two and then walk out of the Apple store holding them over his head.
Alas, I don't think anyone actually did this. A missed opportunity for Mr. Incredible, for sure.

on another note, am I the only person left in the world that can type like a mofo on a normal keyboard at a speed that a touch screen will never ever match? I finally hacked my iphone to use a bluetooth keyboard and feel like I have IPad 2.0

muskrat

nope, I can type blazing fast on a normal keyboard to  [thumbsup]
now, did you unlock from 3.13 on the phone?  I can't seem to do this.  [bang]

I see a few legitimate complaints on that list but this was clearly written by someone who does not like the Ipad or maybe any apple product. Again I am a PC person and not some apple fanboy =)

I was going to comment on each bullet item but I will simply point out a few of the complaint which is laughable.

1. Upscaling makes old iPhone/iPod Touch apps ugly.
*This is like saying my PS2 games don't look as sharp on my PS3. You don't have to upscale them and many look nice actually for x2 the size they where originally designed for. It's a bonus you can use them IMO.

7. YouTube looks ugly on the big screen.
*Well of course it does. How is that the fault of the device? How about you view the HD movie instead which look fantastic on the Ipad.

10. The headphone jack up top is awkward.
*You know the Ipad screen rotates in any direction you want right?

11. The Home button gets in the way while holding the IPad horizontally.
*Again not true. I never ever Accidently hit the button while holding it.

14. The iBookstore only works with the IPad.
*What? You want to read a full novel on a Iphone... You're crazy man =)
