That sucks, but that's a very full life for a big dog.  Been lucky enough to have a best buddy for that long myself and there's nothing easy about that last day.  As Warren said, the only cure is more of the same.

TREAT ME KINDLY

Treat me kindly, my beloved friend,
For no heart in all the world is more
rateful for kindness than the loving
heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick,
For though I should lick your hand
between blows, your patience and
understanding will more quickly
teach me the things you would
have me learn.

Speak to me often, For your voice is
the world's sweetest music, as you must
know by the fierce wagging of my tail
when your footsteps fall upon my ears.

Please take me inside when it is cold
and wet, For I am a domesticated
animal, no longer accustomed to the
bitter elements. I ask no greater glory
than the privilege of sitting at your
feet beside the hearth.

Keep my pan filled with water, for I
cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food that I may stay well,
to romp and play and do your bidding,
to walk by your side, and stand ready,
willing and able to protect you with
my life, should your life be in danger.

And, my friend, when I am very old, and
I no longer enjoy good health, hearing
and good sight, do not make heroic
efforts to keep me going.

I am not having fun. Please see that my
trusting life is taken gently. I shall
leave this earth knowing with the last
breath I drew, that my fate was always
safest in your hand.

My dad used to carry a copy of this poem in his wallet.
That's beautiful.  Thanks, rgramjet, for sharing.

Sorry Brix for your loss...  I have 2 dogs myself and I can't bare the thought of not having them around.  I feel for your loss...

:'(  RIP Lucy.  We all know to well the pain of saying good bye.  Remember the good times and always keep the photos handy.  My heart and prayers go to you.

What a beautiful girl.  So much intelligence in those eyes.  I'm so sorry, Brix.   :'(

Sorry to hear about that Brix, she looked like a great dog.  It is the hardest make the beast with two backsing thing, isnt it? Sadly I've been right there too, had to put down my yellow lab (also 13 years) when he came down with cancer last year.  Don't mind saying it was the single worst day of my life so far.  It sucks way worse than you ever think it could.  I was lucky to get some support from other DML folks at the time, which really helped.  It gets easier with time but you never forget.

Rest in peace.

I couldn't own a dog for this reason.

It is the hardest part, and it sucks, but to me a life without dogs is not worth contemplating.

on our way to the vet now. Thanks to everyone for their well wishes and warm thoughts.  Thankfully, I have a loving wife and an awesome son ( #2 due in august) to help me through this day.  RIP lucy, today you can be a puppy again.

Dude,

I'm sitting here shedding a few tears for your familly and Lucy.  She looks so much like my pup and I hope everything goes smoothly and she goes peacfully.

She will be a puppy again and you'll get to see her again.

+1 Metallimonster.

It just brings up thoughts of the phone call from the pet hospital and the Vet telling me my dog had passed. I can hear her words and it is making me tear up right now. I feel your sadness.

Your pooch will be a puppy in the big doggie heaven in the sky.

Just don't let him become too good of friends with Alex.......he will get led in the wrong direction and taught how to get on tables and eat food off plates! :)

on our way to the vet now.

That just choked me up a little.   :'(

My sister sent me a pic when she was on the way to the vet with the English Bulldog I rescued for her.  He was nowhere near his golden days but the 3rd time wasn't a charm when he got vicious.   :-\   I like to think that he, my pug and English Mastiff are all playing together again.  RIP boys.  :-[

You've got a little one on the way B.  Luckily, you'll have him around soon enough to distract you from this sad day.  Like Factor said also..there's a lot of dog people on here to talk to when you're feeling blue!
