Looking at the terrain, it's mother nature putting sand there. The bulk of them loose it right in front of an unstable bluff like face. There's probably a constant stream of small stuff coming down it. Some of the locals should get some road paint and mark it as a SLOW area.
The 1st guy totally locked is rear wheel. At least he was ok, and also rode the locked wheel down. If he'd released it after that slide started he might have shot himself much further over the cliff... could have been real bad then

I can't see the video just yet. It's blocked here so I'll have to wait till I get home.
I see that it says "LA Canyon" and can say from first hand experience that sand does "happen" (is there sand in the road in the vid?).
For example: on Laurel Canyon road between Mulholland and Hollywood there are a number of places where water seems to come right out of the rock. I don't know whether it's natural, or someone on the hill like Brad Pitt just taking a shower. Then on Muholland between 101 and Laurel Canyon there are a number of places where rocks, dirt, sand, etc always seem to find their way into the lane.
Of cours there are many more occasions of this; these are just two examples that come to mind immediately.

i wasn't serious about his putting it there, but, it seems sand is the culprit, sure are a lot of people enjoying themselves watching people fall
You might as well say the same thing, cause they know its going to happen. they dont bother to tell people.
Id find the person who makes that video and knock his teeth in. Obviously hes video taping for fun. someone could seriously get hurt like that guy in yellow, im sure he broke a rib.

Those vids are from a stretch of road called The Snake, it's Mulholland Drive near the Rock Store.
*Lots* of bikes go through there.
There's at least one photographer there every weekend.
Not sure why so many folks bin it there, the corner's not that difficult.

That is so weird. In the last bit of the clip you can see guys coming through on the same line and same speed. One guy makes it and one guy doesn't. ? ? All rear end slide out low sides. The front wheels don't let go. Mostly all exiting the corner except for the first guy in the yellow who locks up his rear wheel ahead of the corner entrance.

I've seen that video posted and analyzed on a coupla different forums. IIRC, someone said that the end of the turn is surprisingly off-camber (which you can't see in the vids).

The presence of the camera contributes more to the crashes than any presence of sand.....

+1
it may also be the acceleration out of the corner combined with sand, some people might crank it harder than others, lose grip

The turn is going uphill the whole way, but does level off a tiny bit at the exit.
But it's not a hard turn.
Surprised more folks don't bin it going the other way, as it's a long downhill run to that corner.

Interesting video. It really didn't look like most the guys who went down were really attacking the corner that hard. Even the bikes with rear ends letting go on the exit didn't sound like the riders where accelerating hard.

if you look at the guy that goes over the hill, you can see that the guard rail has been hit enough times to cause it to bend .
Theres someting fishy going on there.
the guy on 1:55 loses his shoe. lol
Theres defintely loads of sand there... but why everyone rather films then try to get a sign put up...

The R1 at around 2:12 engine revs after the tire lets go, before that he was pretty steady on the throttle.

most of these guys look like they know what they are doing on the bike. the rear just kicks out, you dont hear the engine rev up. i think theres something fishy going on.
+1, besides the first guy, they more or less look like they were doing what they should be doing.

i wanted to say, that ive been in some tricky sitatuations at slow speed, which this looks like. ~30mph ish. its not that easy to lose the rear tire unless theres debries. and even then, if is a line of sand, usually you'll end up hooking back up once you slide past the sand... so there has to be a lot of make the beast with two backsing sand thats blending in.
