So I'm in the shop for my first bike and I feel like the 696 is a perfect bike to start with. I'm 5'7" so the seat height is perfect and the weight of the bike is very manageable. So anyway, went to a dealer in Long Island and checked out what they had in stock. Looks like the new 2010 696 w/out ABS goes for around $9,500. They also had a 2009 696 with about 350 miles on it and asking $8,500 for it.

Since this is the first time I'm shopping for a bike, I have no idea how much I can negotiate down. I checked kbb, but their info on used bikes doesn't seem accurate bc I can't enter mileage. They just use an average mileage number. What's the best way to get an accurate value on a used bike. The '09 696 that they had with 350 miles was perfect but I don't know about $8,500 for it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!![center[/center]

dealer will always be higher for used bikes.

if you are looking for used, search the ads here or online. look around, you'll find a good price to compare.

Has the 696 with miles been titled, or was it a demo?

It makes a difference in dealer's pricing.

I know that the dealer pricing is going to be higher, but I'd like to put some money down and finance the rest. I know I can always get a bike loan from outside sourcing, but it's easier to do this all through the dealer.

Yes, it was titled and it's not a demo.

I'm in Queens, NY so I've been looking locally in Queens or Long Island. I went to Gold Coast in New Hyde Park, which is about 10 minutes from me. They have a nice staff and would be bringing my bike to them to get serviced since they are so close to me. There are a few other dealers, but not that close. The deal that they had for the 2009 696 was 4.9% for 48 months. Not great but doable.

I'd prefer to buy the bike locally, rather than shipping it to me. Being my first bike, I'd like to be able to see what I'm buying in person.

Easily? Can you show me where I could find a low mileage 696 for $7,500 "locally"??

But my question was how much I could negotiate down at the dealer. Depending on what the market is for a 2009 696 that has 350 miles...I don't know what it is. I know the dealer is going to be charging a little more, but I may be willing to a pay a little premium so that I can get their financing rates and maybe better service because I bought it from them. I sound like a real beginner don't I.... Grin

i see nothing wrong with doing it that way.  having a relationship with your dealer is valuable.

Sometimes when you are negotiating with a dealer, it is easier to negotiate for free future maintenance or free gear rather than lowering the price.

Makes sense. Now I have to figure out what to ask for to sweeten the deal.

Good advice.  Beyond the money of initial purchase, a good relationship with the dealer could mean cheaper service, faster service, and possibly a better deal on a future bike.  I spent a little extra on my bike through the shop, as opposed to an individual purchase, but the shop has more than made up for the difference in quality and speed of service.  My shop threw in a one time 30% off on any gear purchase and gave me a Scorpion Exo400 helmet.  The owner also delivered my bike to my house because I didn't have my endorsement at the time.  Not to mention the small problems that I have just gone up to the shop and the tech came out in the parking lot and fixed without any charges.  I feel like the extra money was well spent.  I guess it depends on the dealer.  I may have just been lucky.

Save even more money and try to chat this owner down on a 2006 Monster 620, I bought the identical bike with less than 600 miles for under $4500. Only mine did not come with a rear seat cowl. This is an excellent first bike...

I totally agree. Get the cheaper bike now, odds are your going to wreck it anyways.  Learn on the 620 and move up to a bigger bike later.  If you take care of the 620 you'll get a good bit of your money back later.  Lots more parts and acc. available used for an older bike too.
