Yea, the 97 & 98 models suffered from a brittle coolant overflow tank it seems.  99-up doesn't seem to have that problem ~

I must say that life has gotten considerably easier since we got the fj60. Get us 17 miles to the gallon and is an absolute blast. And when we go camping, all we do is throw an inflatable bed in the back and were done. Hope you get better soon!

You're getting 17 mpg? We've had our FJ60 for just a week & about 200 miles (100+ of that to drive it up from Phoenix) and I've got my fingers crossed for 13 on our second fill-up later this week (first was before we hit the road for home). Send me some of your mojo, please!!!

And to stop threadjacking... Much as we are enjoying being Cruiser Folk again, I remember living with an FJ40 in the Mid-Atlantic and the chances of The Major finding an old Land Cruiser locally that's affordable & not completely rotted are pretty tiny...

I'm in the same boat (well, without the bodily injuries). Looking for a beater automobile to putz around CA in. Bit more spending cash though. The local salvage yard has some pretty cheap salvage titles that usually do the trick. I've had good luck with an old S-10 and will likely pick up an old 325i if the old porsche mechanic doesn't have a cheap heap.

DFW area of Texas.

I'm going to be honest. I checked it out, and it looks like it's in decent shape for an early 80's VW, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to bet on it for a long drive back to the west coast. Mostly due to the fact that it's an early 90's volkswagen  [laugh]

it's gotta be around an 82, with 97k on the odometer. Body is pretty clean, interior looks like you'd expect. I popped the hood and the engine looked okay....no real bad signs. Looks like it's been a daily driver it's entire life...no garage queen for sure. I'll get the number on the window next time I go into town, and give the dude a call.
