and how would they beat out one of the top and original thrash bands?

i love maiden, but see no way they would oust slayer in this line-up.

I think Slayer is the one out of place...they are Speed/Death metal...

you have Anthrax & Megadeth which are more thrash and work well together and then Maiden is a good transition from Megadeth to Metallica ...

slayer is darker than the others, but they are def thrash. they may be on the border and faster than the rest, but they are thrash.
(on a side note, what is the dif between speed and thrash? i always had them in the same category.)

fore me, megadeth is the one that is slower and out of place. then again, i never liked mustain's voice so i don't like the majority of their catalog.



I'll get the metalhead to chime in when she gets back from work. she can explain the differences better since she's the one who has been listening to all of these bands hardcore since she was a teen. i on the other hand was pretty much bannedx from listening to "that devil music" until i learned how to be an adult and realized what i like.

Sorry if I touched a nerve there?  '84-'90, i was in the thick of my headbangin years, and hence, the albums they put out during that period (and subsequent tours) were my favorites.

I can forsee people doing what is now considered par for the course and bashing anything past And Justice.  I get it, I really do.  I didn't grow up listening to one Metallica and then all of a sudden they went mainstream and they were not "MY" band anymore. Oh and heaven forbid they cut their make the beast with two backsing hair.  That makes them sell outs.  I was 7 when the Black Album came out and have been in love with their music, all their music, ever since.  You know, maybe people just don't like Load/Reload and Death Magnetic (I'll give you St. Anger even though I think it has some great parts) and I'll give them that but I think that for the most part old style Metallica fans have never really given the newer stuff a shot.  There are songs on Load and Reload that are totally heavy and Death Magnetic is musically and lyrically one of their best albums.

IMO you have it all wrong for most of the people who prefer Metallica pre "And Justice". It isn't about them cutting their hair, it isn't about them becoming hugely popular, etc. People who dislike them for that now are douchebags. I say good on them for making a shit ton of money and all that...I'd do it if I could as well.

It is about their music. They changed with the Black album. Black is a decent album, and has a few good songs. It's also the last of their good albums IMO. They have a good song now and again, but overall they suck now if you ask me.

You're too young to remember the original Metallica, since you were 7 when Black came out. I was a senior in HS. You know their CDs and songs, but that's not the whole story.

I've seen them twice. First was Master of Puppets tour when they opened for Ozzy. Holy shit...they killed Ozzy!   One of the best shows I've ever seen (and I've seen ~25 major shows). They flat out rocked. Nothing fancy, just kick ass music.

Second time was on a stadium tour (1993 maybe? Black Album, second tour for it I think) with Alice in Chains (who dropped out the show before), Candlebox, and someone else that I can't remember. They were horrible. Music wasn't that great...even the old songs. Kirk was walking around in a one-piece leotard looking thing. WTF.  They just didn't seem to have the same passion I saw in the Puppets show.

Lots of bands are better than them now live IMO. For comparison, I've seen Pearl Jam twice. Once for the Versus album (1993 again maybe), and again last October for the current album. They were just as good live both times, and the "shows" (i.e. props and such) were about the same. I don't like their new drummer and much as Dave A., and their new music isn't as good as their early stuff...but they are still just as good live.

You're right that I am too young to remember the original Metallica but I also have about 300 downloaded concerts from throughout their history so I think I know just a little bit about the band, their history, and even their personalities (met them twice).  I also started going to concerts at the age of 6 so I've been around the block when it comes to live music.

So you haven't seen them since 1993 or so and your trying to give an opinon on how good they are live now which is 17 years later? I've seen them 13 or so times since you've last seen them and listen to a different concert from Kill Em' All Era to Present just about every day at work.  They are definitely better now than they were in 93.  I'm sorry I just can't see you having a point when you haven't seen them play for 17 years and 6 albums later.  I promise you that the songs for Death Magnetic are just as good live as Master or One.

I completly and whole heartedly disagree with your assesment of Pearl Jam.  I'm a huge PJ fan and have seen them I believe 6 times including twice in the past month.  I'll start with what you put it as similar sets (props and such).  Currently, Metallica comes out to an arena full of smoke with about 30 lasers shooting different colors all over the place and different color flames.  They also play in the round while Lar's drumkit rotates during the show. Also, giant coffins come down from the ceiling and rotate during the show and finally at the end of the show they turn on the lights and release thousands of black Metallica beach balls fall from the ceiling while they finish the show with Seek and Destroy. Pearl Jam had nothing on the stage whatsover (which is fine IMO).  There is no way in hell that the stage part of the shows for these two bands are in any way similar.  

Pearl Jam is good live or I wouldn't go but they for sure lack the energy that Metallica has on stage. You have to remember that in 93 they were all drinking and now they play sober.  To just back up my own case: My friend who is just as big a PJ fan as I am a Tallica fan will even admit that Tallica is way better live.  I'll even one up that because I sall them both in 2 days in 08 at Bonnaroo and most people I talked to liked Metallica better and that is not their normal crowd at all (mostly hippy jam bands and alternative types of music).

I honestly don't care if you just like the old stuff because I love it too but please don't make assumptions that you know how good Metallica is live if you haven't seen them in 17 years compared to a band you've seen in the past 8 months.  

For the record, I've seen George Clinton twice and been to Bonnaroo 3 times now (4 two weeks from now) and can say I'm pretty well versed on lots of different types of live acts.

My list of best bands live would be.

Metallica, Robert Randolph and the Familly Band, STP, Ted Nugent, Tom Petty.

Close bands- Backdoor Slam, The Raconters, The Black Keys, Lynard Skynard (I know not the originals but still awesome live).

Regarding shows...go back and re-read my post. I didn't say Metallica and PJ have similar shows...that is just silly. I said PJ's Versus show was similar to their current show I saw last year. Very good then, very good now...all about the music (not that stage shows are bad...Iron Maiden Powerslave was a friggin' awesome show).

I'm really not trying to hate on people who like the older Metallica, just hoping to share my passion for all of their music and how much better their newer albums are than how they are percieved.

You really should see them next time they are around you.  But brush up on the new stuff 
Seriously though, even if you've hated everything since the Black Album, pick up Death Magnetic or hell illegally download it.  Its a very very good album.

I am looking forward to seeing this show.  I've seen all of these bands multiple times except Slayer.

With this and the UFC fights they've been showing at the theatres we might be looking at a new way to see big events. Personally I think it is pretty cool.
