You can't beat a Ruger 10/22 for all-around plinking.  :) I modified mine a tad  ;) for home defense use.

As for hunting rifles for deer or similar critters, I tend to like the .243. Nice flat trajectory and they reach a loooong way out. I've spent a lot of time hunting in Montana and this caliber has become a fave.

I think you misread something.

1000 meters would be closer to 3 football fields

1football field = 100 yards. minus endzone.
10 football fields = 1000 yards.

1000 yards is just the extreme range of what a 7.62 cant hit isnt it? Thats too risky of a shot if it is a high priority target if you ask me, you just dont have enough information about  the conditions that far down. Now if we are talking 50cal. ive heard of shots up to 3 miles. thats over 17,000 yards. On a person? sure why not 50cal is more of an anti-material round. They have different rounds that can do a varying degree of damage to an IFV and the personell inside it.

Nope.

1000 meters would be even further from being 3 football fields than 1000 yards would be.

1000 meters is almost 11 football fields.

17,000 yards is over 9-1/2 miles.  1760 yards in a mile.

Newsweek had a nice little write up about that a few years back.  They did a story on Operation Viking Hammer and IIRC that was detailed in the article.

Yay Canada! I could make a Newfie joke involving hunting and moose, but it probably isn't appropriate seeing how he did kill someone.

I've got a Benelli Super Black eagle, a Browning Citori, Both 12ga. and a Browning A-bolt 30-06.

I mostly bird hunt, using the Benelli for duck and the Citori for dove, pheasant, quail, sporting clays, ect.

I haven't shot the 30-06 in like 8 years so I'm considering selling it.  What's the best way to do that?  Find a dealer and sell it to them?
