My "dilemmas"
«

So here it goes. To start with, I bought my first Duc at the end of October. I love it! Its a 2001 M750. Pretty yellow, used with dings and scrapes. It still runs mint and thats all I really care about. She is my first bike. Now I know its not the slowest thing on two wheels but I come from a bike family. We get power hungry fast. My cousin had a 1996ish M900. I liked it alot more. Come to find out after joining the forum and a bunch of calls to Jeff at monsterparts.com that it has a bunch of upgrades that mine doesnt have. Well my cousin came across an issue with his bike recently, the master link on his chain fell out and the chain decided it had had enough and gave the engine a good once over and smashed the sh*t out of it. Heres where today comes in and my dilemmas. Just looking for some advice and to see what others have done at this point since I now own two bikes. (Yes I bought it off of him before he could sell it to some other jack arse!!!)
1. Do I part the 900 out and upgrade the bejeezus out of my 750. Simple and cost effective
2. Repair the 900, which would be around $200, have 2 bikes that are both fun
3. Turn the 900 into a stroked out bike that may never get finished because it turns into the worlds largest project on a budget of ramen noodle.
Now all 3 ideas seem interesting to me right now. However the 900 has a couple of issues. The frame may or may not be slightly tweaked from the previous owner who had dumped it before my cousin purchased it. Whats the average cost of a used frame from that gen if that is the case. The motor has low compression in one of the cylinders and may need a rebuild. I have the tools and my uncle is a mechanic who owns a small shop so all I need to do is purchase parts and invest my time into learning how to do the build. I have essentially unlimited garage space so storage is not my concern and I have all the time I need since I have one working bike now.
Just looking to see what any one else has done or would do in this kind of situation. Also, would I be able to swap the parts off the 900 onto a different frame? What kind of issues would I be facing? Thanks in advance.

How about parting out the 900 but keeping and rebuilding the engine to fit into your 750? I'm not positive, but I believe they are a direct swap.

i say do a motor swap if you are that power hungry.
sell the 750 engine for cash to buy parts to upgrade the 900.

swap frames into the 900 and part the 750 gets my vote if the 750 frame is tweaked,
if not, fix the 900 and then sell the 750.

To get a frame straightened usually doesn't cost very much 200$-400$

If it were me, I'd fix the more desireble bike, swap the parts around so the nice stuff is on whichever bike you want, and sell the other. You'll end up with a nice ride.
Keeping two very similar bikes is sort of a waste.

I'd ride the 750 and project the 900.

Well I appreciate the ideas. Like I said just wanted to get a feeler to what others have/would do. As it stands I now have two bikes. I paid $2g for the 900 and looks like its going to take about $600-$800 more to make it running condition. I think that seems to be the best bet. The motor tear down starts tomorrow and as long as I remember to take pics I will hopefully have some fun stuff to be posting in the near future! And with any luck this doesnt turn into a $10,000 project!! But if it does, well, who am I to judge what the gods have in store!!
In the mean time Im going to do a little rain dance to make the clouds clear, dust off the 750, and go and try to not kill myself before Im done with this new bike!! [moto]

I can't seem to part with my M750. I'm betting a little work on eBay and you can get the M900 going for a reasonable cost. The difference between the 750 and 900 is a great way to explore power wheelies!
