One of our toilets leaks water past the flapper valve so it periodically has to refill the tank on it's own.

I put in a new flapper and the leak has not stopped.

What should I do next.

Never had to troubleshoot one of these before.

the long  tube that runs up from the bottom of the tank may need to me replaced or tightened, water may be leaking past it

If you manually push the flapper down does it form a good seal?  Or does it still leak?

All good points.

Will check the flapper and tube thing tomorrow and report back.

Also - all flappers are not made equal!  I have found the $10 ones superior to the $4 ones.  The cheaper ones also do not last as long.

For a small leak, put some food dye in the tank so you can detect it easier.

also make sure there isn't anything built up on the edge of the flapper.  You often get scale on the flapper & the tube it seals.  That will allow water to get past.  Somegirls's dye suggestion would be the easiest way to tell.

Replace it.

I spent so much money on make the beast with two backsing flapper kits and flusher valves and whatever else goes in there.

Long story short........toilet was built in 1980 and they don't make the proper size replacement parts.
