Here is a shutoff valve..  The nut on the far right is called a packing nut. This nut needs to be tightened clock-wise, quarter turn at a time. 75 percent of the time it is leaking from the packing nut.

If its leaking from the bottom of the toilet and leaking down the line there is a rubber seal on the fill valve..  You can replace the fill valve for 15 bucks and all you need is a pair of channels. Undo the bottom nut and it will pull straight out.

Well joy.

Turns out my leaking toilet may not have been leaking just at the flapper.

It has also been leaking at the shutoff valve.

And dripping / soaking onto / into my carpet.

And through the floor where it happily stained the celing in my sunroom under it.

I have pulled back the carpet, am running a dehumidifier at the rev limiter and have cut out all the soaked carpet pad.

The toilet seems to be listing toward the back left corner.

Where the floor is soaked and is likely make the beast with two backsed.

I am not happy [bang]

Hey! Threadjacker! This is the toilet thread-bring your floor repair issues elsewhere.

Yep. I can't wait for that part of the project.

i don't know if that's cool. . .

or disturbing.
If you're answering the ...

boy's gonna have a farm comment...

it's cool.

Actually I was answering the toilet punch bowl thing.

I know farms are cool.

Farms have tractors and those are cool. So we must then infer that farms are cool. ;D

I shut off the valve and drained the tank.

I stuck a short bowl under it to catch drips.

I wanted to see if it was leaking between the valve and the wall.

No water in the bowl.

I just now opened the valve and filled the tank. I then shut the valve back off to see if it's leaking out of the tank and down the line.

I'll check it in the morning.

If you drive the nicest car in the neighborhood, work in a cash business, and don't pay taxes, you're either a preacher or a drug dealer...

Monsterlover

Ask the previous owners.

I'd never do it.

and replace said shutoff valve with a ball valve.

I don't care for globe and gate valves, they tend to break when you finally decide to shut them after being open for years.

The valve seems to be ok.

I tightened up the packing nut 1/4 turn and it doesn't leak.

It does leak where the feed line goes up into the tank so I guess I'll stick another fill valve in there.

The dehumidifier dried things out thoroughly.  I'm not going to get into pulling the toilet and replacing flooring.  I'ts still pretty solid, just deformed a little.

:P

+1...kinda gross...

At least this happened,.. now you can get rid of carpet where it doesn't belong. [cheeky]

Monsterlover

No way am I pulling the carpet up and putting money into flooring.

We're going to be selling the house in a couple months.
