Just familiarize your self with your state laws..  if I remember correctly, in ny you can't shoot some one breaking into your property in the back..  true?

Posting anything with the word "law" in it is generally a bad idea.

Someone may answer via pm, but (i hope) probably not in the thread itself.

I like the unlocked version of this thread better than the locked, worthless unusable version. . .

carrying is a fire insurance policy.  it's not a perfect analogy but just like insurance it is useless unless you're covered at all times.
This.

I didn't feel any specific need to be armed because of that particular Sam's Club on that particular day... however, my decision to not be helpless in the event of an armed confrontation wasn't made with the aid of a map of potential danger spots (otherwise, I'd just not go there.  Duh.).  It was made with the understanding that my background in martial arts and tactical folding knife come out on the losing end of an "active shooter" scenario at the government office that I work in, or at pick-up time at my kids' school, or when the latest domestic disturbance goes bad in the checkout line or parking lot at the local (insert location here).

There's no hero in me... I am realistic enough to know that I'm never quick-drawing and plugging the bad guy and saving the day. I'm also not some 'roided up kid in an Affliction t-shirt that leaves the house looking for a bar fight.  I'm a  35 year-old married father of two that has no interest in hurting anyone, ever.  I'm not carrying in Sam's Club so that I can puff up and regulate when the lady handing out the samples shorts me on my chicken quesidilla nibblers, or so that I can get in someone's face when they cut in front of me in line.  I'm carrying due to the great cosmic "What if?"  If "What if?" never happens, then I've wasted around $400 and created a bunch of unnecessary headache for myself and I couldn't be happier about it.  If "What If?" does happen, I like the odds of me and my family surviving a hell of a lot more than if I don't have $400 worth of headache in my pocket.

You should stop forgetting.

Predator Tactical does make some awfully nice 1911s and 2011s.  Matt Burkett does a lot for the sport and his guns are very popular in the USPSA scene out west.  I know it is hard to justify the $2500+ pricetag on custom 1911s....but I can offer one piece of advice. Find someone with a 2011 Open Gun and try it out - within 24 hours you will be contemplating if you actually need to eat 3 meals a day, or if you really need both kidneys.  Hopefully, my open gun from Freedom Gunworks will be here next month. If you are interested in having a custom 1911 built, also consider Cheely Custom Gunworks, Bedell Custom, Millenium Custom, SVI, Gan's Guns, and Limcat.  You WILL understand where the extra money went when you shoot one for the first time.

Having said that, there are plenty of very nice off-the-shelf 1911s out there.  It all depends on what you are going to do with the gun.....and if you can survive your wife finding out you just spent $3k on a gun  [popcorn]

Walked into Atlantic Guns in Rockville.  everytime i go in there I ask myself why go anywhere else.  customer service is spot on.

"Mark", the guy behind the counter, took time out from the huge Glock Sale they were having, to hear about my current AR woes.  He gathered opinions from the three others behind the counter and they all called BS.  Cant wait to see what they find after checking it out.

Thanks for the advice, snake. The gun is beautiful to look at and I could only imagine how it shoots. I've read plenty about them and seem to be regarded as a very nice gun. I am not sure I want to shoot one...then I will have to wait a few months for it to arrive, LOL.  I will check out those other manufacturers you mentioned. Much appreciated.

i just bought my wife a new car....so I think she should spend too much money on a gun for me. Fair trade?

So I have been wanting to put together a nice M4 for a while now...

And after speaking with a buddy of mine who has a tactical supply shop that pretty much all of the local SWAT/Sheriff guys swear by, I discovered that my ONE complaint about the M16/AR15/M4 has been resolved. Having rounds discharge across my line of sight. Being left handed, this has always been the bane of my shooting existence.
Stag Arms makes a plethora of M4/AR left hand uppers. And now I am piecing together my new matte OD firearm.

I have never really been a handgun guy. Sort of a last resort weapon to me. I prefer to end the threat from a distance.  ;D

I am now debating on which one I want to base it off of.
My 3 personal choices would be:
1. http://www.stagarms.com/product_info.php?cPath=14_23&products_id=398
2. http://www.stagarms.com/product_info.php?cPath=14_23&products_id=221
3. http://www.stagarms.com/product_info.php?cPath=14_23&products_id=308
With this and number 3 being almost a toss-up...
http://www.stagarms.com/product_info.php?cPath=14_23&products_id=317

My goal will ultimately be distance shooting. 300m+. But I also like the idea of a short "urban" combat weapon. I may end up just doing both but I want the first one to be my distance shooter.

.223 isn't the best choice for a distance rifle...is it?

depends on the round and the barrel

1:7 twist with some of the 77gr loads are accurate to 600yds (0 bullet drop) but by the time you get to 800yds, the drop is about 100 inches.

none of the guys i trained with used it for anything outside of 300m though, either 7.62 or .338LM (which was brand new at the time)

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

I can hit 300-500 with .223 all day long. Not ideal of course and won't have the stopping power of an M82A2 at that range  [laugh] but then you don't really need stopping power for paper targets.
I like a challenge. Having optics the size of a 2 million candle power spotlight and 7.65/.338/.50 rounds to shoot is the weiner's way out!  [cheeky]

Just got back from a long weekend at my friend's ranch in west Texas. Lots of drinking, eating stuff grilled over mesquite wood, bullshiting and a shit load of shooting! [thumbsup] There were 12 of us and 10 of us did 99% of the shooting. Had a kick ass good time. My Suburban got great gas mileage on the way home with the lighter ammo load! [laugh] ARs, MP5, Rem 700s, Glocks, 1911s, S&W model 29 and 686, High Standard, 10/22s, etc. You wouldn't believe the brass clean up! [bang] ;) Damn good fun. [bacon] [bow_down] Can't wait to do it again.
