The KelTec is far more expensive than an LCP.  I looked at many and for a conceal the LCP is perfect price IMO.  The 40 that rides in my truck and bike will be enough if I anticipate anything.   [evil]

Kimber may have so QA issues

The Raleigh ALE officer I had the displeasure of meeting had a nickel USP Compact 45- thought I'd get some leniency being a USP owner...not.

I had a Kimber Ultra Tactical II that I loved.  Sold it and bought a 3AT- not really a replacement but much easier to conceal and much less fun to shoot.

MSRP on the Keltec P3AT is $325, and street price is about $250.  The Ruger LCP MSRP is $380 and street price is about $325.

I see new Keltecs for under $250
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=269085077

They are cheaper.  The Rugers are selling for much more.

That being said  I think the Rugers are nicer.  I believe they have a slide stop which was deleted on the P3AT, and the Ruger's finish is clearly nicer.

** prices corrected, I just checked on galleryofguns.com for the MSRPs

There's a 150 dollar difference in these parts.  I just cruised 2000 tables at the show Saturday too

Well, I finally gave in and ordered an open gun from Bobby Keigans at Freedom Gunworks.  Going to be a full size (5.4") KKM bull barrel, STI frame and slide, Dawson DP2 comp, and sideways C-More mount.  I'll post up pics when it is finished...this is going to be the longest 3 months ever  [drool]

So I've decided to jump into the world of gun ownership.  I've shot plenty throughout my life.  Handguns, rifles, tactical but never owned one.

I really only want to buy one gun and get good at shooting it and try not to get addicted to them. So after looking around and doing some research I've decided on a lever action in a pistol size like .357-.38 or .457- .44.  I know it's not "the best" for home defense but can do the trick if needed (I have plenty of other weapons for that anyways), is fun to shoot, and in case something really does happen (say a Katrina situation or worse) I'll have a gun that is easy to use, relieable and takes the same bullet as handguns.

I'm looking at Marlin 1894's in .44 right now but am open to suggestions. Anyone have any thoughts on buying  a lever action or any thoughts on other types of guns that will give me the same use?

That's actually a good choice if you really must share calibers.  I would get the .357 version if it were me, shooting the 44 mag is a bear for most people.   A 357 pistol has more than enough oomph to get you thru the night.

Sharing calibers is not really important.  I just wanted something that is fun to shoot, relatively cheap to shoot, and can be used in emergency/survival situations.

I'll take your advice on the 38 I think I'll probably try both and see wht I'm like.  I've shot a .44 revolver and it wasn't so bad. I watched a few videos on youtube and thought the rifle length really makes shooting the .44 not so bad but please correct me if I'm wrong.  I'm trying to do this the right way so I only have to buy one gun.

Any suggestions on where to find a good used gun? What auction sites have you guys used?

44 in a lever rifle is fine for me, but i don't enjoy shooting a 44 revolver.  that's just me, and i'm not a small guy.

gunbroker.com.  poke around on it and search a lot.  don't buy the first deal you see, because a better one will come along tomorrow.

so that is exactly what I'm thinking.  I don't ever plan on using a revolver but the option would be there if TSHTF.

I'm sure I'll fall in love with guns just like I do with everything else and get a nice 9mm handgun too. ;D

I'm not in a hurry so it looks like I'll be watching gunbroker.com a lot in the next months until I find the one I want.

How successful could I be by just going and checking out pawn shops?

you never know what you can find in a pawn shop, and you might just get a deal.

Do your research on gunbroker to determine values.
