Same basic Mauser action.  Take a look at one in person and you'll see what I mean.  Squint and you'll not tell the difference. I'd be surpised if the stocks weren't interchangeable.  No one is innovating on Mauser actions.
I can't disagree with that, but fact is they're two separate companies in different countries.

it suffers from a few problems..

1.  rimfire.  can't reload and make your own loads.
2.  too much established 22lr out there -- 22lr is too damn cheap.  17hmr is a necked down 22 magnum round, but that just makes it cheaper for the manufacturers not for the users.
3.  solution in search of a problem.

it's not a bad round, it's just not needed imho and therefore, it never will get more than a tiny market share.

22 magnum has been around for a while and is a fine round, so is 22 hornet and a few other in that class.  22mag is a rimfire and 22hornet is a centerfire (reloadable) but both are niche. 22mag solves the problems that 17hmr proposes to solve -- flatter trajectory, higher velocity -- and you can use lighter projectiles with it and the same barrels even... but no love...

Fixed.

The .17hmr flies at about 2500 fps.  Its amazing how potent/destructive the miniscule bullet can be.

Im a huge fan of both the .22lr and .22mag.  Both have stood the test of time.  The hmr is a lot of fun to shoot.........like a micro .22-250.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

i didn't realize it was a 22mag case -- but that's just an extended 22lr case...

IIRC the 22mag can get close to 2500 fps with the lighter projectiles, but you lose stability due to length

i can see the reason for the narrower projectile and getting more stability over long distances, but it comes across as a gun nerd's dream to me.. i.e. "i want to shoot squirrels from 200 yards and i'm lazy so i don't want to adjust my scope for drop"

I'm not disputing they're a good rifle.

They are not indistinguishable...honey.  :-*

No, you're right.  They are different.  I think the CZ I handled in person was a Zastava now.. One of the old ones when the Zastava factory was called CZ

I have a Savage bolt gun in 17 HMR.  While it is an impressive cartridge, paying $12-15/50 is a bit ridiculous.  It isn't bad if you are going to use it for small game, but running 500 rounds through it at the range gets a bit pricey.  One thing to consider, it is significantly louder than a 22 WMR.  Look into the 17 Mach 2 for a slightly cheaper round (22LR necked down to 17)

Um, if being a Gun Nerd is wrong.........I dont wanna be right!

The .17 bullet itself is about the size of a pencil lead.  Makes the .22 bullet look huge when they are separated from their respective cases.

I have an opportunity to pick up a Marlin 1894 Cowboy in 45 Colt for about $500. I'm not terribly interested in it, but wondering what some possibly more educated opinions might be. Should I be giving it more consideration?

45 colt is an ancient round, fairly low power but fun to shoot on a lazy afternoon.

i have a Puma copy of an 1894 in LC that I like but I'd prefer it in something like 357 or 44.  45 colt is considered a cowboy round..

Not sure about your comments regarding the low power of the 45 LC. Based on what I've read, the LC is a great round for all-around use.

And I don't what country you're in comrade, but here in the U.S., we're all cowboys.
