Has anyone actually shot a Rhino revolver? I know what they are but haven't really read much about them. My step son asked me about them when he saw them in an American Rifleman magazine. He wanted to know why they built them like that. All I could say is I'm not sure. ???

To JM, I think all those manufacturers make great handguns. I'm not qualified to rate them best to worst. You couldn't go wrong with any of them. I am only personally familiar with SA, Kimber, Colt, Wilson, Rock River and Les Baer 1911s. And there is not a bad one on my list. I just read a nice write up on the Ruger SR45 and their 1911 version, the SR1911, in the December issue of American Rifleman.

The market is full to the brim with affordable, excellent quality 1911s. They are like AR platform rifles these days. Just pick your price range and style you want and go try a few. [popcorn]

From what I understand, the main purpose behind the Rhino is to reduce the distance between the axis of the bore and the axis of the arm to reduce the amount of muzzle rise.  The shorter the distance between those two axes the smaller the moment of inertia.  The recoil comes more straight back into the arm instead of tending to raise or tip the gun up in recoil so sight acquisition is faster.  The theory works well with light and medium recoiling cartridges but when shooting something like hot loaded 44 mag, straight back recoil just stings and makes your elbows ache.  Then the tipping up of the gun eats up recoil energy through motion.  I have a couple Super Blackhawks and a S&W 29.  The bore axis to arm axis distance on the super blackhawks is more than the S&W and the Rugers tend to twist and climb.  The Smith recoils more straight back and just hurts.  Shooting big single actions with heavy loads is a completely different technique - instead of fighting the recoil to get the gun back down, let the gun move in that upward arc to eat up that energy.  I'd rather shoot the heavy 44 loads in the blackhawks any day over the Smith.

I do think I want a 1911.  I need to just go and handle a few.

Do it, you won't be disappointed. My Sig Sauer 1911 is the most accurate handgun
I own and the most fun to shoot.   ;)

Don't forget Colt when looking at 1911's.  They are turning out some darn nice stuff at prices equal to or less than the new kids.  I wouldn't mind one of their railguns for a full size 1911.  Their 21st Century Commander is a fantastic looking handgun.

I agree with Warren on Colts.

As an aside; Warren have you ever shot the American Hand-gunner World Shoot-off?
Did it once as a "C" shooter in '96, love to do that match again.

And the sugar fountain fairy swore so hard when she came to super-size that stale hope soybean; liiiike a homeless German woman. Who is this super-sizing spirit-crushing femme? And tell her I'll break a tree root up in her shrimp.

Being faster than you thought possible…it feels good. No, screw thatâ€"it feels like shotgunning a gallon of adrenaline and chasing it with an all-night orgy aboard a burning Viking boat.

I never did shoot that match.  That stuff is so much fun - its great to get out there with your peers and have at it, so many great people - I miss it a lot.  I am toying with the
idea of shooting the Steel Safari again in New Mexico and/or Camp Perry again for smallbore.  Haven't had
the resources to play as much lately, but things might be improving slightly - it sure would be good to get to a
big match again.

It was a great match, start shooting at 8:00 in the morning finish about 5:00 in the afternoon for 4 days, all steel, all man vs. man best of three runs, 32 rung ladder for "C" limited times 16 stages.
Best "Big Match" story, USPSA limited Nationals in Fredricksburg  mid '90s, guy on our squad had a barrel failure (the barrel on his 1911 sheared off just past the lugs), sending half the barrel and slide down range. (the barrel did hit the target low) We (the rest of the squad) dug into our range bags, went to the safety table, and between us had enough parts and tools to get his gun running before the next stage.

How is Rock Island's stuff?  I've heard of them but don't really know anything about them.

In my opinion (since I have one) they make really good stuff. Not sure of their AR guns since I don't have one. Somewhere in the back of what's left of my feeble mind I seem to remember the guys that started it used to work for Les Baer... I think. That can't be a bad training ground. ;)

The Architect

So I stopped at a larger gun store in NH this morning.  I was looking for Blazer aluminum 45 auto.  The clerk responds "we don't sell that stuff."

I had to ask.  "Why?"

"It's dangerous."

"Dangerous?"

"It can explode in the gun, damage the gun and hurt the shooter."

They don't sell steel case either for the same reason.  Is there any legitimacy to the clerks claim that aluminum case ammo can explode when fired?  Can the lead get lodged/wedged due to the weak casing and cause the lead not to go out the barrel rather have the pressure destroy the chamber?

the_Journeyman

Um...  Isn't pulling the trigger simply initiating a highly controlled explosion?  Silly clerk.
