I picked up a S&W M&P 9 compact last week from the local gun store.  One thing I cannot recommend enough is getting a trigger kit from Apex Tactical.  They have two kits: one for a sub 3lb pull and a 5lb pull for carry.  Also, you can get grip extensions and use the 17-rd magazines from the full size m&p.  I forget the name right now, I'll have to look when I get home.

As for the ruger sr9, it is probably one of the best values for a striker-fired pistol out there right now.  I have the full size version, but both can be had in the $400-$425 range brand new.  Look into Ghost Triggers for a new trigger bar to remove some over-travel and reduce pull weight.

I have yet to experience any sort of malfunction with either pistol.  I have used basically every kind of ammo you can imagine including military surplus and reloads without fail.

That's sort of my gold standard for how good a pistol is.  I like the idea of glocks, but kaboom after kaboom has made me shy away from them.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Kaboom?

A new phrase for your shooting vocabulary:  "Glock Kaboom"

I had an AP9 kaboom on me, but fortunately I was wearing gloves and goggles and I had bought it at a gun show for 100 bucks.  I still have the top end (metal) but the grip, etc disintegrated

yeah, old Gaston Glock, being the Teutonic perfectionist, designed the chamber so that it isn't supported in the rear bottom.  Reloads can be slightly problematic as they can stretch a bit making the wall thinner.  Almost all guns have a fully supported chamber so it's not an issue for them.  Just the Glocks (and I think the Springfield XD guns too, but I haven't looked closely).

It's an issue for any gun that fires out of battery as well.

I blew up a glock 21sf two years ago.  If you are going to shoot a 45 glock, make sure you are using +P brass.  The glock 45 has a huge unsupported area at the base of the case.  When mine blew, the gun stayed locked up - it blew a semi-circle out of the unsupported area of the case, blew out the trigger, side of the frame and wrecked the mag.  Exciting.

I was shooting new Starline brass and a hotter load that I had been shooting in my 1911's with no issues.  I have had several failures with Starline brass so that may be part of the problem.  Using brass with a heavier base construction may help.

Allow me to brag on myself a bit.  I used to do a lot of long range rifle shooting.  I co-authored a book on the topic and have an NRA Long Range Expert rating.  I haven't been doing much shooting for the last few years due to time constraints, finances and a new hobby (Ducatis)  I was down in West Texas a couple of weeks ago for work and took a couple days to go up and visit friends of mine that run a shooting school and range in Eastern New Mexico.  I had one of my 300 Win sporters with me.  One of my friend's ranges has steel targets from 400 to 1000 yards.  I set up, dialed in my data and put a first round hit on a steel IPSC sized target at 1000 yards.  Woohoo!  I can still do it!

Alright - I'm done bragging now.

I just took my XD apart and looked at it.

The underside of the chamber isn't fully supported, but both the front and rear of it are.

Whittington? Or elsewhere?

Nice shot! It's OK to brag on that one. [thumbsup]

Its a private school, straight West of Amarillo, out in the boonie rimrock country at the back of a dead end dirt road - nice!

In that direction from Amarillo they could put in a 10,000 yard range and still not bother anyone! [thumbsup] [popcorn] Nice to have lots of empty space. Good for gun ranges and race tracks. Think anyone around Miller in Utah is gonna complain about noise on raceday? [laugh]

Hope you had fun at your bud's place. Nothing like ringing steel! [thumbsup] Didn't you say you were friends with the Arntzen folks? Love their stuff. Wish I had more!!
