WJ sums up my feelings as well. Mini 14s are good, inexpensive plinkers. Hunt with them? Sure. Drive tacks at 200+ meters? No. Have a hell of a lot of fun with them for less $$$ than a tricked out AR platform? Sure. I have never fired a Mini 30 but it doesn't matter, you were asking about 14s. I used to have a stainless 14 years ago as a farm/plink rifle and it worked fine for that. Sold it, but it wasn't because I hated it or it didn't work right. It was fine for what I bought it for. Get one, burn up ammo, have fun, peace, love, Woodstock, etc...  [thumbsup]

You can have more options with the AR platform, across the board.  Easier to swap barrels, more choices for glass/mounts and just a more durable weapon.

The Mini14 isn't bad, but it's not the AC556.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Yeah, I agree with you too but it sounds like all the AR options/accessories may not be that big of a thing to tcspeedfreak. Saving money on the gun end in order to spend more on the ammo side might be the deciding factor. Or, he could shop for a good clean pre-loved AR at around the same price point as the Ruger.

Burning AK47 - 300 Rounds & on Fire

I like his comment at the end..."Too hot!"

Didn't he think is was too hot when it started flaming about 100 rounds into the exercise?

i would lay money that's an illegally converted romanian gun.  the wood furniture is impregnated with cosmoline, which will ignite if heated up enough.  that's why it's burning like a candle.

Recoil will make the fore end retract slightly if your weakhand is not securing it in a normal two hand stance.

Is it just me or did the flaming AK47 guy seem a little drunk? First off, it's kind of a good drunk idea to do what he did. Second, it's nice to have a equally drunk friend handy to film your handywork for posterity. Third, he seemed to be stumbling around a bit more than the normal full auto AK recoil would cause. Fourth, that last 100 round drum mag just didn't seem to want to seat very well did it? Seemed to be having a little trouble with that one... while stumbling around. ;D Oh well, fun to watch and I didn't have to pay for the burnt out barrel, the ammo or the fire extinguisher! [thumbsup] [laugh]

He's a pro too... no plugs or muffs and no eye protection. Huh... whad you say?? [roll]

your right having the gun doesnt do any good if you dont have the ammo to play with it. but on the other hand i do want to accessorize a little bit pistol grip stock ect.  where im at you cant find an AR platform in reasonable condition for under $800.  and ive heard that the mini platforms are less prone to jamming after a few hundred rounds without cleaning is there any truth to that???
just another fool playing with boats and bikes

fastwin

I don't know of any particular "jamming" problem with either weapon after a few hundred rounds. I shot my Mini-14 a lot without any troubles. And have put untold thousands of rounds through ARs over the years without cause for concern. The only real problem that has ever reared it's ugly head with ARs has been at two urban rifle classes I took and both were without a doubt caused by ammo. One was a Thunder Ranch class with Sellier and Bellot ball ammo that I brought with me and one was a Tiger Valley class where we HAD to use HP ammo due to range rules. The instructor had Wolf HP ammo available for dirt cheap that the students could buy. Which I did. And I couldn't make either of the 3 ARs I brought run through one complete mag the entire 2 day course. :P

No previous problems with S&B and I had never used Wolf. I got really really really good at clearing jams and mag changes. [bang]

I've shot a ton of Wolf and I can tell you it can be dirty compared to commercial ammo.

I did have some failure to extract problems with one of my ARs but that was after about 5000 rounds with no cleaning.

So yes, you will find some issues with the ARs   [evil]

If you are patient and diligent, you can find parts kits and assemble one in that range.  That's the bare bones rifle though, no glass or other gadgets.

Here is an AR parts kit for $550 http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=669147

You just need your own lower receiver.  Here is a stripped lower for $60
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=208372602

I think I'm going to buy a dozen of those lowers.. they have the correct rear geometry...

There you go.  $600 not including shipping.

It's funny, my bad experience with Wolf .223 hp in that class was the only problem child. All the other student's ARs ran fine. [bang] I had a Colt, a DPMS and a Bushmaster lower/built upper gun. All three had previously run like freight trains in courses and 3 gun shoots. And all three had the same feed problem with the same group of magazines. :P Weird. All 3 wigged out on Wolf and none of the other students had trouble. The instructor even let me run 2-3 mags of my ball ammo as a test and the 2 guns I used worked perfectly as always. Puzzling evidence. [roll] Damn sure burned me on Wolf. Glad it works for others but I won't ever bother again.

Went to the range today...it was close to 50.

The paper died, but damn I suck with a pistol.

Shots all over the target so I can't blame the sights. :P

Came home and was shooting the 22 out the back of the barn. I'm better with a rifle.

Paper killer! [laugh] What did you shoot? The CZ?

Hey, great way to start the new year! [thumbsup] Ride your scooter too? [moto] Wish I had. Too busy cooking black eye peas and cleaning the house for junior's birthday party tomorrow. Jalapeno cornbread is in the oven and the BEPs are ready. [bacon] [drool] All I need is a bike ride and a shoot-n-fest and my year will be properly started! Oh and a good cigar! ;D
