Electricity arced between the two as a result of the hit. Notice the missing paint ~

With above-ground utilities, it's an iron pipe that goes from above the roof into the ground. Utility cables enter the down-turned top of the pipe and go to the switch/fuse box. It's also used as a ground, thank goodness.
